Self-service checkout

Self-checkout

Overview of Self-Checkout in Torgsoft: a modern solution for your store

Self-checkout is a new operating mode in the Torgsoft software ecosystem (based on the Torgsoft Hybrid app) that allows customers to scan and pay for items on their own. This tool is designed to optimize store operations, speed up service, and improve the customer experience.

Self-Checkout

Why do you need Self-Checkout?

Implementing this functionality in your store solves several strategic and operational tasks at once:

Service speed: provides fast scanning and payment without involving a cashier, allowing you to serve more customers in the same amount of time.
Resource savings: lets you deploy additional checkouts without significantly increasing headcount.
Modern format: increases loyalty among customers who are used to modern technologies and prefer scanning and paying on their own.
Security and control: ensures strict control of high-risk product categories, for example, mandatory age verification when selling alcohol or tobacco.

Feature overview: what Self-Checkout can do

The program functionality is designed to meet the needs of both customers (convenience and simplicity) and business owners (control and flexible settings).

1. Responsive and customizable interface

Support for different screens: the interface automatically scales and adapts to different screen resolutions (from small monitors to 4K) and supports both landscape and portrait orientation.
Welcome screen (splash screen): in idle mode, the checkout hides its working functionality behind a welcome screen. You can customize its appearance: change the background image (for example, add an advertising banner), the store logo, and the greeting text. The splash screen automatically disappears after the first item is scanned.
Flexible setup of the item list and totals: the owner can configure which columns are shown on the screen (name, SKU, barcode, price, discount, etc.) and which data is displayed in the totals row (or hide this row completely).
Font controls: the interface font size can be increased or decreased for maximum readability on specific hardware.

2. Product handling and scanning

Product handling

Continuous focus: the cursor always returns automatically to the barcode input field. The customer does not need to use a mouse — scanning works from any area of the screen.
Manual entry: if a barcode is damaged, manual input is available via the on-screen keyboard that pops up on the touch display.
Changing item quantity: the customer can change the quantity of a regular item using a convenient numeric form (calculator). Support for weighted items is also implemented (up to three decimal places).
Removing an item: if the customer changes their mind, they can remove an item from the cart. If the last item is removed, the checkout automatically resets to the welcome screen.

3. Excise goods tracking and age verification (18+)

Excise goods tracking

Torgsoft has paid special attention to the sale of excise goods:

Excise stamp entry: when an excise item is scanned, a special form appears to enter or scan the excise stamp.
Managing excise item quantity: the quantity of such items can be increased only by scanning a new stamp again. To reduce the quantity, a special window is opened where the customer can uncheck specific excise stamps to remove them from the receipt.
Checkout lock until age confirmation: when attempting to pay for an excise (or age-restricted) item, the checkout is locked and requires age confirmation (the "18+" window). Payment becomes possible only after a staff member comes over and scans their personal badge (staff barcode).
If the customer does not want to wait for a staff member, they can simply remove the excise item from the receipt and pay for the rest of the cart on their own.

4. Loyalty programs

Loyalty programs

Customer cards: when a discount card is scanned, the customer name appears on the screen, and the discount is calculated and applied automatically to the items in the cart.
Bonus cards: when a bonus card is scanned, only the customer name is displayed (without the discount percentage).

5. Payment and printing a fiscal receipt

Printing a fiscal receipt

One-click payment: there is one large payment button on the screen. After it is pressed, the system automatically connects to the bank terminal and processes the payment.
Fiscalization: the checkout is fully integrated with the software-based ECR from Torgsoft. After a successful terminal payment, a fiscal receipt is printed automatically.

During the payment and receipt printing process, a special waiting window appears on the screen so the customer does not interrupt the transaction.

In the settings, you can preselect a specific settlement account to which funds from this checkout will be credited.

6. Security and access rights (Staff mode)

Security and access rights

A regular customer has limited rights. Full control over the checkout is held by the store staff:

Access to settings: the settings menu, where you can change the settlement account and manage fonts, columns, or images, opens only after scanning the staff badge (staff barcode).
Hiding control buttons: the owner can configure the checkout so that the "Remove item" and "Change quantity" buttons are not visible to customers at all. They will appear on the screen only when a staff member scans their badge to help the customer edit the receipt.
Reset and close: only a staff member can perform a full forced reset of the current sale or completely close the self-checkout app via the protected menu.
Self-checkout in Torgsoft is a well-thought-out tool that makes the purchase process autonomous while maintaining full financial control and security for the business owner.

What equipment is required for self-service mode?

What equipment is required for self-service mode?

For the "Self-checkout" mode in Torgsoft Hybrid, support is provided for modern retail hardware that ensures a complete autonomous purchase cycle. According to the documentation, you will need the following equipment:

Monitor (preferably a touch display): the program interface automatically scales and adapts to screens with different resolutions (from small monitors to 4K). Both landscape and portrait screen orientations are supported. Since the program is integrated with the Windows on-screen keyboard for data entry (for example, damaged barcodes or excise stamps), a touchscreen monitor is the most convenient option.
Barcode scanner: this is the main tool for interacting with the checkout. It is needed to scan product barcodes, excise stamps, and discount or bonus customer cards. In addition, staff need the scanner to read the badge (staff barcode) when confirming customer age (for 18+ items) or accessing the settings menu. The system supports various device types, including Bluetooth scanners.
Bank terminal (POS terminal): self-checkout is designed for cashless payments and has a button that automatically connects to the connected bank terminal to process payment. Therefore, having and connecting a bank terminal is a mandatory requirement for self-checkout operation.
Receipt printing device (software-based ECR or a fiscal register): after a successful terminal payment, the checkout automatically fiscalizes the sale and prints the receipt. The program supports the Torgsoft software-based ECR (fiscalization is performed by the ECR, the printer prints the receipt) as well as Exellio and Datecs fiscal registers, and the Webkassa software-based ECR.
Physical keyboard (optional): if the checkout is not equipped with a touch screen, you can use a standard keyboard connected to the computer for manual entry of a barcode or item quantity.

This set of equipment allows you to create a full-featured autonomous checkout where customers can quickly scan items and pay by bank card while receiving a fiscal receipt.
