Feminines in Ukrainian spelling

A few months ago, changes were made to the Classification of Occupations DK 003: 2010". Now in HR documentation, you can write not an accountant, but an accountant, not a manager, but a manager, etc. Read this article to find out whether you need to make changes to HR documentation for all female employees and how to use feminine gender in general.

What are feminines?

Feminine nouns are feminine nouns that have been formed from masculine nouns with the same root. Most often, they are used to indicate a profession or social class.

Most professions are still used in the masculine gender, although some feminine titles have long been commonplace and do not cut the ear, such as teacher and teacher, student and student.

Starting from August 2020, it is possible to make changes to the personnel documentation of employees, and now it is possible to adapt professional job titles to determine the feminine gender.

How to write professions in the feminine gender?

For the correct spelling of the profession in the feminine gender, you need to use paragraph 32, item 4 of the "Ukrainian Spelling" approved by the Cabinet of Ministers of Ukraine No. 437 of 22.05.2019.

To correctly write a profession in the feminine gender, you should follow the following rules:

Is it already possible to indicate the names of professions in the feminine gender in personnel documentation?

Despite the fact that changes have been made to the Classifier of Occupations, it is still too early to make entries in employment records, employment contracts and other personnel documentation indicating professions in the feminine gender. This is because the relevant amendments to other legal acts have not yet been made.

In order to write professions in the feminine gender, it is necessary to amend the Procedure for Formation and Submission of the Single Social Contribution Report. Currently, you will not be able to write accountant or lawyer in the ERU report (Appendix 4), as there is no adaptation of professions in Table 5, column 12 "Professional title of work".

It is also necessary to amend the Instruction on the Procedure for Keeping Employee Labor Records. It also does not yet provide for feminine spelling.

Why is this important? Because when making an entry in the employment record book, the name of the profession must exactly match the name specified in the hiring order, and the same name must be in the employment contract, i.e. it must be identical in all personnel documents. If, for example, you write "manager" in the order and indicate "manager" in the unified social contribution report, these will be different professions.

It is not yet known when other regulations will be amended. Therefore, we continue to use masculine occupational titles.

And what do you think about the use of feminine pronouns?
