IBAN in Ukraine for business: how to use the account correctly
23.10.2025 11:10IBAN (International Bank Account Number) — is an international account number used in Ukraine as a mandatory format for bank accounts, users' payment accounts, and electronic wallet numbers if they are formed according to the IBAN standard. For Ukraine, such a number consists of 29 alphanumeric characters: the country code UA, a two-digit check digit, a six-digit NBU ID code, and the account number. Current bank codes (MFO) are considered NBU ID codes. (National Bank of Ukraine)
What a Ukrainian IBAN Looks Like
A Ukrainian IBAN has the following structure:
-
UA — country code;
-
2 digits — check digit;
-
6 digits — NBU ID code;
-
from 5 to 19 digits — account number.
Thus, the full number always has 29 characters. The NBU website has an official service for generating and verifying Ukrainian IBANs. (National Bank of Ukraine)
Where IBAN is Applied Now
For entrepreneurs, IBAN is used in daily work:
-
in payment instructions in hryvnia;
-
during settlements with contractors;
-
for receiving payments from clients;
-
for paying taxes, fees, and ESC (Unified Social Contribution) to budget accounts;
-
in account details placed in contracts, invoices, acts, on websites, in CRM, ERP, cash, and accounting systems;
-
in QR codes for cashless payments. (Law of Ukraine)
What Details Should Be in a Payment Instruction
In a paper or electronic payment instruction, the following must be specified, in particular:
-
date and number of the document;
-
name or full name of the payer, their code, and account number;
-
name of the payer's payment service provider;
-
amount;
-
payment purpose;
-
signature;
-
name or full name of the recipient, their code, and account number;
-
name of the recipient's payment service provider. (Law of Ukraine)
For business, this means that in payment details, it is important to correctly indicate not only the amount and purpose but also the contractor's code and account number. If the details are filled in violation of requirements or the documents required by law are not submitted, the payment service provider has the right not to accept the payment instruction for execution. (Law of Ukraine)
Is It Necessary to Specify the MFO Separately?
In practical business work, the main account detail is the IBAN itself. Since it already contains the NBU ID code, it allows identifying the servicing payment service provider. The NBU directly states that thanks to IBAN, the user can identify the payer, the recipient, and the payment service provider serving them. (National Bank of Ukraine)
IBAN and Payment Accounts of Non-Bank Payment Service Providers
After the Law of Ukraine "On Payment Services" came into force, the IBAN standard applies not only to bank accounts. The NBU separately determined that the user's payment account number and electronic wallet number can also be formed according to the IBAN standard, and such a number must be specified in payment instructions. This is important for businesses that accept or make payments through non-bank payment service providers. (National Bank of Ukraine)
Budget Accounts: How to Pay Taxes Without Errors
Taxes, fees, and ESC are paid to budget accounts according to the details published by the State Tax Service (STS). These details should only be taken from the official section "Accounts for payment of charges" on the STS web portal by selecting your territorial body, payment code, and community. This is the method the STS recommends as the current procedure for finding up-to-date accounts. (tax.gov.ua)
For an entrepreneur, this means:
-
do not copy old budget details from correspondence, templates, or forums;
-
check the account on the STS website before every important payment;
-
check the IBAN especially carefully when paying ESC, PIT, military tax, single tax, and local payments. (tax.gov.ua)
IBAN in Foreign Economic and Currency Payments
Transfers in foreign currency are performed according to a separate NBU regulation. In currency operations, banks and other payment service providers also work with international account details, and the current NBU regulation directly mentions the IBAN international bank account number. For entrepreneurs, this means that for currency payments, one must focus not only on the IBAN but also on the full set of details required by the bank for a specific jurisdiction, currency, and type of operation. (Law of Ukraine)
Does IBAN Change the Bank Card Number?
No. IBAN is an account number, not a payment card number. The card number is a separate payment detail. For business, this is important when the website, contract, or message to clients needs to specify the account for non-cash transfer, and not the card number of an employee or an individual entrepreneur (FOP). (National Bank of Ukraine)
How an Entrepreneur Can Organize Work with IBAN Without Risks
To avoid losing payments and creating unnecessary disputes with contractors, it is worth:
-
checking that the same current IBAN is in the contract, invoice, act, letter template, CRM, website, marketplace, and accounting software;
-
updating the IBAN in the company profile, printed forms, and payment document templates;
-
not publishing details belonging to a natural person on the website or social networks if the payment should be received by the business;
-
taking details for tax payments only from the STS website;
-
checking the IBAN through the NBU service or at the bank before mass mailings to clients. (National Bank of Ukraine)
Why IBAN is Important for Business Right Now
IBAN is no longer just a bank standard for accounts. It has become a basic detail of the entire payment infrastructure: banks, non-bank payment service providers, electronic wallets, credit and instant credit transfers, as well as QR payments. The NBU is separately developing the infrastructure for instant transfers (SEP), where a transfer can be executed within up to 10 seconds, and the transfer of details between users is allowed, in particular, through QR codes. (National Bank of Ukraine)
For entrepreneurs, this means that a correct IBAN in the details is not a formality, but a condition for fast crediting of funds, correct automation of accounting, and reducing the number of errors in payments. (National Bank of Ukraine)
