Designing a price tag for a product: tips for entrepreneurs
20.12.2025 21:43
An entrepreneur is not allowed to sell goods without price tags. This is prohibited by Instruction No. 2 and also stipulated by the Law on ECR.
Therefore, to avoid an unscheduled inspection by the State Food and Consumer Service, it is necessary to know how to properly format a price tag in a store and what penalties apply for violating current requirements.
What is a price tag?
A price tag is a label that provides the consumer with information about the price, manufacturer name, product weight, etc.
Thanks to this method of informing, it is easier for the store visitor to assess the product's quality, familiarize themselves with its composition, expiration date, and decide whether to add the item to their cart.
Mandatory details on price tags
Plastic or paper labels must include details depending on the product category.

Where to download a price tag template?
Each price tag follows a standard template. With the Torgsoft software, you can use a ready-made label template or create your own using variables. For example, you can additionally display the article number, product name, or any other information.
Torgsoft software offers a tool for printing warehouse price tags. This helps simplify inventory management, create price tags in advance, set discounts, or choose the appropriate price type.

Thanks to the automation of price label printing, a store owner is always prepared for seasonal sales or special promotions.
For printing price tags and labels, you can use a desktop Torgsoft label printer or a label gun.
Price tag formatting and placement features
The manufacturer may indicate the retail price on labels, tags, or packaging in which the product is sold to the consumer. The price may also be marked directly on the product if it does not spoil the appearance or affect the quality.
Businesses selling printed materials attach tags to the samples. The label must indicate the publication price and the date it was set.
When selling medicines and pharmaceuticals in pharmacies, the price must be indicated on the original packaging.
In restaurants and other food establishments, as well as retail businesses, employees responsible for pricing must sign the corresponding labels.
Modern technologies allow automated verification and product identification via barcodes. Therefore, this variable is often added by entrepreneurs to price tags.
Price tag with a new price
If the product price changes, the entrepreneur must update the price tag. It is enough to cross out the previous value and indicate the new price.
If the old price cannot be crossed out, for example, if it was marked using a label gun, then a new label must be placed over the old one.
It is strictly forbidden to mark prices with a pencil.
If the price was changed due to markdown, the label must include the letter "P".
Price tags must be prepared for products before they are placed in the sales area of the store. Before opening, authorized employees of the business check their correct formatting.
Methods of marking retail prices
The price on the label can be marked using a stamp, ink, or pen. Labeling can also be done using a label gun.
Price on the tag and receipt does not match: what to do?
The State Food and Consumer Service provides guidelines on consumer actions if a price discrepancy is found.
You should contact the store manager, explain the situation, and request a recalculation. The buyer has the right to purchase the item at the price indicated on the tag. If the receipt shows a different amount, the store must refund the difference.
To prove the discrepancy, take a photo of the price tag and present it with the receipt to the store administrator.
If the store management refuses to resolve the issue, you can file a complaint with the State Food and Consumer Service.
Fines for incorrect price tag formatting
For violations of legal requirements regarding correct price tag formatting, the State Food and Consumer Service may impose administrative fines and sanctions. The business owner will be held administratively liable.
The law provides for the following types of fines:
-
incorrect price tag formatting: fine from UAH 17 to 170 for the first violation, UAH 85 to 459 for repeated violations within a year (Article 155 of the Code of Administrative Offenses);
-
selling goods without a price tag: fine of 30% of the product value, but not less than UAH 85 (according to the Law on Consumer Protection);
-
providing false information on the price tag: fine from UAH 170 to 850 for the first violation, UAH 850 to 3,400 for repeated offenses (Article 156 of the Code of Administrative Offenses).
For systematic violations, businesses and Sole Proprietorships may be subject to increased fines. Sanctions may also include temporary suspension of business activity.
To avoid negative consequences and unnecessary inspections by the State Food and Consumer Service, monitor your product price tags and stay updated on legal changes.
