10 tips for server protection

The Terminal version of the Torgsoft inventory program is popular among clients whose stores are located in different parts of the city, different cities, or countries. Additionally, the Terminal version is convenient because it allows remote management of the store and business operations. This is more relevant now than ever before.

The Terminal license of Torgsoft is a logical extension of the standard Ultra license for a local network, as it allows multiple users to work with a single database over the internet. All actions are performed on the server. This means that powerful computers are not necessary for the salespeople for comfortable work.

Requirements for the Terminal Server

• A server with a clock speed of 2.8 GHz or higher, 4 GB of RAM or more, and 30+ GB of free space on the hard drive.

• A static external IP address from the provider.

• The operating system of choice: Windows Server 2008 R2, 2012 2016 Standard, 2019 Standard. It is not recommended to use Windows XP, Windows Vista, Windows 7, Windows 8, or Windows 10.

• Availability of fast and stable internet:

• 10 Mbps download and upload speed on the server (the faster the speed, the better :) );
• 1 – 2 Mbps download and upload speed for each server user.

Requirements may vary depending on the number of client connections to the terminal server.

The stable operation of the remote desktop depends on the quality of the connection. Ping is the response time of the computer to a request. In other words, it is the time it takes for information sent from one computer to reach another in the network and return. The higher the response time, the longer the wait time for the web page to load.

We do not recommend using wireless WiFi connections for client connections. Connect the server to the network via an internet cable. Wi-Fi is often unstable, the internet speed is lower, and neighboring access points create connection interference.

10 Recommendations for Server Protection

These are the minimum but necessary settings to increase the secure operation with the remote server.

• Each server user must have a password. User passwords should consist of at least 12 characters: lowercase letters, uppercase letters, and numbers. If you add special characters! "№;%:? * (-, the password will be nearly impossible to guess. Do not use names or birth dates for passwords. Use a password generation service to create a password.
• Do not grant users Administrator rights. The default "Administrator" and "Guest" users should be disabled. For managing the server, create an account with administrator rights and a non-standard login.
• Change the default RDP port for user connection. The default port is 3389. Set any port in the range from 50000 to 65535.

• Change account lockout policy settings: lock the user account after several failed login attempts.

• We recommend using and not disabling UAC - User Account Control. This is an important security tool in Windows.
• Do not use the server for personal purposes: for watching videos, installing non-business programs, playing games, or storing personal photos.
• Install Adblock Adblock in Chrome.
• If you use Outlook on the server for Mass mailing - configure email only for sending messages, not for receiving incoming emails. Check incoming emails from a personal computer.
• Install antivirus, do not turn off the firewall. Add the TORGSOFT working directory to the antivirus exceptions, and open the necessary ports in the firewall for remote server operation and the program: TCP, UDP access for ports 6001 and the port used for remote desktop connections.
• To improve security on the server, the router should be properly configured.
