The History of Shopping Day

The World Shopping Festival was founded on November 11, 2009, by the Chinese as an alternative to the American “Black Friday.” It was created in honor of single students who had no partner and didn’t celebrate Valentine’s Day or similar holidays. The Alibaba Group noticed this trend and quickly turned it into a global celebration.

To cheer up single people, Alibaba manager Daniel Zhang came up with “Singles’ Day” on 11.11, since Chinese youth are fond of interesting number combinations. At that time, he was working on a new project — the website Tmall.com. On that day, the company announced massive sales, with 25 brands participating. Soon, the number of orders skyrocketed.

In 2013, during the celebration of Singles’ Day, 156 million purchases were made, which led to the creation of World Shopping Day. Sales on November 11 surpassed Black Friday and Cyber Monday.

Sellers also hold numerous prize draws; the main thing is to understand and follow the conditions correctly.
