History of Trade Day

In Ukraine, Trade Day is celebrated on July 25 since 1995, before that the holiday was celebrated on the last Sunday of July. The same holiday is celebrated, for example, in Romania. Every country has its own holidays of professions, for example, in the U.S., there is the Administrative Professionals Day. And in most countries of the world there is a Labor Day.

Interesting facts about commerce

  • The first shopping center appeared in the ancient Roman Trajan's Forum, there were over 150 stores.
  • Ships came by the dozens every day to the Tarif town near the Strait of Gibraltar and brought goods. Everything that came to Tarif from the ships was taxed, each commodity had its own tax. Soon they were called tariffs, and then the word spread throughout the world.
  • In 1841, in Paris, rows of antique dealers and junk shops on the boulevards of Paris spoiled the architectural look of the capital. So, merchants gathered in one quarter, on the square in front of the gates of the fortress of Porte de Clignancourt. In piles of old things appeared fleas, and the market was called a flea market, «marche aux puces». The name stuck with all flea markets in Europe.
  • Until the mid-19th century, a seller could set a different price on their goods, depending on the buyer's looks: if they were wearing expensive clothes the seller requested a higher price, if in rags, then a lower price.
  • Once upon a time, the market was not every day, but only on Friday. Often people borrowed goods and promised to pay for them on the next market day. This is how the expression «He has 7 Fridays a week» came to be, it is when a man does not keep his word.
  • Point-of-sale profits are often volatile and depend on season, customer activity, and the salesperson's own performance. But some sellers believe that it is mostly a matter of luck. Accordingly, some read prayers for trade, others rely on omens such as do not borrow money after sunset; everything will sell, if you touch all the goods with money after the first sale; the first money for the goods cannot be spent or borrowed on that day until the end of trade.
  • Tom Parker, the American producer of Elvis Presley, was very competent in various tricks of the trade. So one day he decided to make a profit even from those who didn't like the singer. How? He released a series of badges with the inscription «I hate EIvis». And so people who didn't like the singer bought those badges, and the producer made a profit.
