How and why to give gifts to customers

Customer retention is just as important as acquisition. One of the most effective ways to increase customer loyalty and boost profits is to give them gifts. A small present or an unexpected bonus can evoke positive emotions, strengthen brand connection, and even encourage repeat purchases.

While such strategies used to be just a nice gesture, today they become a competitive advantage. Let’s look at how entrepreneurs can effectively use gifts in retail and what benefits they can gain from it.

 Why are gifts profitable?

A gift is not only a way to show care for each customer, but also a way to increase overall sales volume. What benefits can gifts bring to your business?

  1. Emotional connection with the customer

When a customer receives an unexpected gift, it creates a positive brand experience. People love surprises, and they are more memorable than just discounts.

Emotional connection with the customer

  1. Increased average order value

If you offer a gift for a purchase above a certain amount, the customer is likely to spend more to receive the bonus. It works better than a discount because the customer sees the gift as added value.

  1. Organic PR on social media

People love sharing pleasant moments. If your gift is useful or creative, the customer might share it on Instagram, TikTok, or Facebook, bringing you free advertising.

  1. Standing out among competitors

In a marketing world where everyone offers discounts, gifts help make your store more memorable. This is especially important in highly competitive niches such as cosmetics, fashion, electronics, or home goods.

  1. Building long-term loyalty

If a customer has a positive experience, they will return. Moreover, regular gifts for loyal customers can encourage them to make more purchases.

 Gift or discount: what’s better?

Gift or discount: what’s better?

Many entrepreneurs face a choice: offer a discount or a gift. Here’s why gifts are more effective:

✔ Discounts are perceived as temporary benefits, while gifts evoke emotions that form long-term brand attachment.
✔ Customers don’t always notice small discounts, but even a small present creates a pleasant surprise effect.
✔ Gifts increase your brand value, while frequent discounts may lead customers to think you artificially inflate prices before reducing them.
✔ Frequent discounts are a more expensive method of attracting and retaining customers compared to small gifts.

The optimal strategy is to combine both: offer gifts for purchases above a certain amount or for loyal customers.

Notify or not?

✔ An unexpected gift creates a “wow effect” and increases the chance of organic PR in social networks when your gesture gets shared in customer feeds, creating free promotion.
✔ An announced gift boosts sales, as customers know in advance that they will get extra value. If a potential buyer is informed beforehand about the chance to receive a gift, they are more likely to complete the purchase. You can announce the gift through banners on the website and in social media, or directly on each product page.

Ideal option: create intrigue — announce the gift, but don’t reveal what it is.

Who should receive gifts?

✔ All customers — if the gift is small and low-cost, such as a postcard or sample.
✔ New customers — to encourage the first purchase.
✔ Loyal customers — as part of a loyalty program. For example, a gift can be offered upon reaching a certain number of points or based on the total spent.
✔ For purchases over a certain amount — this strategy increases the average order value. You can give a gift after reaching a specific amount in a receipt or based on the number of previous purchases.

What gift to choose?

What gift to choose? Gift ideas for different types of stores

The main principle when choosing a gift:

  • The gift should be useful and related to your business.

  • Preferably, it should evoke positive emotions.

  • Avoid problematic or bulky items (hard to transport, perishable).

  • Avoid overly obvious branding — the gift should be associated with you, not be plain advertising.

Examples of gifts for different businesses:

✅ Cosmetics — samples, mini versions of products, cotton face towels.
✅ Clothing and accessories — organizers, bracelets, socks, covers.
✅ Jewelry and accessories — storage boxes, brochures about gemstones and care tips.
✅ Books — stylish bookmarks, text markers.
✅ Pet products — food samples, pet toys.
✅ Electronics — screen wipes, cable organizers.
✅ Car accessories — air fresheners, phone holders, road safety booklets.
✅ Food — sealed spices, sweets, recipe collections, product samples. Be sure to avoid products containing strong allergens (like peanuts).

 Alternatives to physical gifts

If you want to offer something valuable without spending money on physical presents, consider these options:

Closed club — access to exclusive content or special offers; invitations to various workshops only for those who have made purchases.
Educational materials — master classes, PDF guides, video tutorials.
Bonus points — customers can accumulate and use them for future purchases.
Private events — parties for clients in the same city, presentations, or online streams for customers only.
Charity — a portion of the purchase goes to a good cause, which enhances your brand image.
Gift for a special customer — you can raffle a gift on social media dedicated to a milestone customer.

It's important not only to sell, but also to build emotional connection with your customers. Gifts help increase loyalty, create positive impressions, raise the average order value, and even bring free publicity on social media.

The key is to choose useful, pleasant gifts that are associated with your business and use them as part of your marketing strategy.

Give more than your customers expect — and they will come back!
