Sales scripts: how to write them to sell more effectively

In almost every business, entrepreneurs face recurring customer service situations that tend to repeat themselves. Before making a purchase, a customer may hesitate, express dissatisfaction with a particular service, the quality of a product, or doubt the reliability of a company. And in the end, he refuses to buy, and the seller loses the chance to close the deal.

To prevent frequent failures, companies create sales scripts that help managers find a common language with customers and motivate them to buy.

What are sales scripts, and what is their purpose?

Sales scripts are pre-prepared scenarios or communication templates that employees use when negotiating with potential or current customers in order to increase the company's profitability.

Ready-made sales scripts contain instructions on how to

  • how to respond to questions,

  • how to present information about a product or service,

  • how to convince customers,

  • as well as how to deal with possible objections or related issues.

The main purpose of scripts is to standardize and streamline the sales process, ensure a uniform approach to customers with common characteristics and needs, and convey important aspects and benefits of the product. Scripts can include effective influence techniques that help make the offer more attractive to the client.

Stages of creating sales scripts

Creating scripts is part of a product sales strategy. Typically, this process consists of the following steps:

  1. Setting goals. Ready-made sales scripts for sellers can help to establish communication with customers; remove common doubts, fears, and objections; promote customer loyalty, increase sales, increase the average check, etc.

  2. Analyze your target audience. Study your target audience: their needs, problems, wishes, and preferences. This will help you write responses that meet the actual needs of your customers.

  3. Developing a script. In the template, display the sequence of steps that the manager must perform during the sale. The script can contain answers to recurring customer questions, arguments in favor of the product and purchase, scenarios for resolving objections, etc.

  4. Employee training. Conduct training for salespeople and introduce them to new scripts. Explain the logic and advantages of using this influence tool.

  5. Testing and optimization. Conduct test sales with new scripts and collect feedback from employees and customers to improve the sales script to maximize efficiency.

  6. Implementation and monitoring. Include ready-made sales scripts in your workflow and constantly monitor their effectiveness. Make adjustments as needed.

It's also important to prescribe one general sales script for the salesperson that would contain answers at all stages of sales, from the moment the client gets to know the company to the sale or upsell.

Here's an example of a sales script for the greeting and contact stage.

  1. Greetings (in the offline store)

    •   We are glad to see you! How can I help you?

  2. Introduction (for phone calls)

    •   My name is [name], I am a representative of [company name].

  3. Identification of needs:

    •   Are you interested in something? Do you have any specific requests for the product?

    •   Are you interested in the new products/services we offer? (If so, please list them.)

    •   What features or functions are you looking for in a product/service?

    •   What is important to you when choosing a product?

 4. Working with objections:

  • I agree with you, the price issue is very important! What about this product variant (offering a cheaper product).

  • Yes, it is true that the price is slightly higher than the competition. However, our product has the following options that our competitors do not have. With them, you can solve such and such issues. In addition, we offer free setup, implementation, and technical support in the first month of use (answered using the example of the Torgsoft accounting program).

  • Client: "I'll think about it." Salesperson: "I understand that this is an important decision. Could you tell me in a few words what caused your doubts? Perhaps I can help you?"

 5. Closing the deal:

  • Thank you very much for your answers. Do you have any more questions before we move on to discussing the details and placing your order?

It is important that the answers to possible customer objections or questions are as truthful and sincere as possible and do not reveal the seller's intention to "push" the goods on the buyer.

At the same time, the salesperson must be firm in their position and confident in the words they say to the customer. These little things, at first glance, can spoil both the mood and the customer's desire to buy goods in your store.

Where to use sales scripts?

Scripts can be used in sales of any product or service, but in the examples below, they can be especially useful:

✅ Sales by phone: contact center employees usually make the most active use of response templates when working with customers. These can include both cold calls, when the manager first calls the customer and tries to get their opinion or establish contact, and answers to users' questions about the product or the terms of ordering and delivery. Cold calls usually annoy customers, so they are used less and less in sales.
✅ In-store sales: in-store sales scripts can also be used by sellers of regular offline stores to establish contact, attract customers' attention, voice product benefits, and increase customer loyalty.
✅ Online sales: an online sales script automates and improves sales in an online store, social media, marketplaces, using chatbots, messengers, or email. This, in turn, increases conversions and sales.
✅ Sales of services: ready-made answers can be useful for selling various types of services, from customer consultations to maintaining customer bases.
✅ B2B sales: In large enterprises, scripts also facilitate negotiations with partners and corporate clients, concluding deals, etc.

The use of scripts certainly helps salespeople to increase sales efficiency and ensure consistency in communications with customers, which affects the reputation of the business.

However, it is worth remembering that just as there are no identical people on the planet, there can be no 100% identical sales scenarios. That's why you should always analyze your audience and customize ready-made sales scripts to your specific situation.
