Ukrainians have long considered Easter to be one of the main holidays of the year. Although not all people follow the traditions, almost every family prepares a festive meal for Easter Sunday, cleans and decorates their homes, and gathers around the table to celebrate this important day.
During the Easter Lent, a few weeks before the holiday, shops in Ukraine, like in other Western countries, hold festive sales. Some of them organise egg painting workshops for children and create an atmosphere of joy, renewal and faith in the victory of good over evil.
The history of the holiday
Easter Sunday is the day when Christians celebrate the resurrection of Jesus Christ from the dead. It is the culmination of Holy Week, which includes other important days such as: Palm Sunday, Maundy Thursday and Good Friday. According to Christian belief, Jesus was crucified on Good Friday and then rose from the dead on the third day, Easter Sunday.
What products are people looking for Easter?
Easter 2023 is celebrated all over the world. People prepare for it in advance, buying the necessary products and things for the Easter table. Others simply go to the shops or shop online to get seasonal and gourmet products at good prices.
According to the International Retail Federation (NRF), 80% of US consumers celebrated Easter last year, with total spending of around $20.8 billion. Shoppers with children are expected to spend an average of $35 on Easter sales, even if they do not celebrate the holiday.
Most stores organize Easter sales to boost sales or to get rid of illiquid goods that have been sitting in the warehouse after the winter. Shoppers keep a close eye out for special offers and promotions during this period. The assortment in stores is usually diverse, so everyone can find what they need most, and often at a lower price.
Here are some typical items that can be included in an Easter shopping list:
1. Food.
In addition to its primary importance, Easter is associated with the release of believers from a long fast. Traditionally, people prepare or buy Easter cakes, Easter eggs, various dishes and desserts for the Easter table. The table is dominated by meat, fish, and sophisticated Easter dishes: jellied meat, homemade sausage, ham, fresh and pickled vegetables, salads, pies, roasts, etc.
The products needed to prepare these dishes are more relevant than ever, but their prices tend to rise in the weeks ahead.
And in Zakarpattia, hostesses have already started thinking about the Easter menu, which will be traditional for their region. For example, Irma Kish from Vynohradiv will be serving her family Hungarian dishes:
"My family is very fond of meat. I often cook them turoshchusa for Easter. It noodles with homemade cheese and bacon. By the way, I don't buy noodles, I make them myself. They should be yellow and soft. You should never hesitate to add eggs to the dough. The noodles themselves should be wide in shape but thin in thickness. The dish is served with sour cream. There will also be perkelt, chicken paprikash, stuffed cabbage and various sweets on the table. "I don't bake dry cakes because children don't like them, but they love pishkowty (ice cream). So I bake several dry cakes and then just make different creams for them."
2. Easter decorations.
Easter is about beauty and symbols of the Resurrection of Christ. Many housewives decorate their homes and festive tables with handmade or bought souvenirs, such as Easter eggs, wreaths, candles, decorative hares, chickens, bouquets of flowers or sweets, embroidery paintings, religious beads, topiaries and other Easter attributes.
3. Gifts.
On Easter Sunday, some people exchange gifts with friends and family. This is especially true if relatives, children, grandchildren, or neighbours are visiting. Popular gifts can be the same decorations we mentioned above, as well as books, sweets, food baskets, decorative and handmade items: embroidery, towels with festive ornaments, egg stands, frames.
Original Easter gift ideas include authentic Ukrainian products such as nochva, the utensils used by our grandmothers to knead dough, and knitted Easter baskets. For example, the Nesamovyto brand offers handmade wicker baskets made in the Carpathians.
And the vintage_garage_antiques brand offers unique antiques and home decor in the Ukrainian style.
4. Clothes.
This year, Easter is celebrated on 5 May - the time when spring is in full swing. So, obviously, it is during this period that people will be looking for light spring clothes that will finally replace winter fleeces and kufaykas in their wardrobes. As always, dresses of different lengths, blouses, trousers made of thin fabric, light sweaters and accessories such as scarves, buffs, hats, caps, scarves, stoles, beanies, headbands are in trend in spring. For the holiday, you can also wear embroidered shirts from Ukrainian craft designers.
5. Flowers.
Flowers are a symbol of spring and renewal, so they can be used to decorate your home and create Easter decorations. You can also use artificial or dried flowers. In addition, flowers are a great gift idea for loved ones.
6. Children's goods.

What is Easter without children's laughter and fun? It is on this day that many parents and grandparents are eager to please their children and grandchildren with gifts. That's why families with children are willing to spend more than on ordinary days. The Easter assortment for children is diverse: from chocolate eggs, rabbits to toys, souvenirs and simply goods at reduced prices, which parents are actively hunting for at this time.
7. Things for a picnic and going outdoors.
Easter weekend is also an occasion to take a break from work, spend time with friends or family, and often outdoors. If the weather is good, citizens can go out to the countryside, to parks and water bodies, which often requires tourist products: firewood, cauldrons, portable chairs, tables, disposable tableware, and of course, food for the table.
Symbols and ideas for celebrating Easter Sunday
Easter egg hunting is a Western tradition where children search for eggs filled with sweets or small toys hidden in different corners of the house.
Easter baskets are a popular gift idea. In the United States, it is customary to give each other Easter baskets filled with all sorts of goodies, such as chocolate bunnies, jelly beans, toys and Easter eggs.
Easter brunch. Easter brunches are popular across Europe as people come together to celebrate. Those who don't attend church at night go to bless Easter cake and Easter baskets in the morning and then go home to prepare a festive lunch or brunch.
Spring decor. The tradition of Easter is to decorate the house with spring decorations and make Easter crafts: dyeing eggs, Easter eggs, creating Easter cards and themed crafts.
Religious rituals. Easter is a religious holiday for Christians. Many people attend church services or participate in other religious rituals.
The Easter bunny is an integral symbol of Easter in many Western countries. Children receive them as gifts, take pictures with them in shopping centres, and adults decorate their homes with rabbits.
Easter sales. Like many other holidays of the year, Easter is also an important date for increasing e-commerce sales. The largest growth in sales is observed in stores selling children's goods, sweets, food and home decor.
