Professional burnout is a fairly common phenomenon. It is most common in sales, as salespeople communicate with different people every day and face many small situations that can often make them feel physically and emotionally exhausted. That's why avoiding burnout is the key to both stable and productive work for the salesperson and the company as a whole. This is especially true now, in a time of war, when most people are in stressful situations, which negatively affects the performance of their professional duties.

Causes of salesperson burnout

Of course, a lot depends on the personal qualities of employees and their ability to cope with stressful situations. However, it is not only the personal responsibility of salespeople that is the main cause. Practice shows that staff are often overloaded with a lot of routine tasks that could be automated, making life easier for salespeople. For example, many store employees still keep records of goods in a notebook, generate reports on daily revenue manually or record sales in excel.
In addition, due to the lack of sufficient motivation and support from management, employees may feel alone with their work problems. This directly affects their performance and contributes to even greater emotional exhaustion.

Professional tools to combat burnout

To keep your employees efficient and enthusiastic about their work, you need to encourage them from time to time with the following methods.

Meetings or "planning meetings"

Motivational meetings are needed primarily for employee cohesion, to identify critical moments in their work and in the mood of the team. Management should also establish a practice of recognizing the success of individual employees on a regular basis. You should not neglect communication on personal topics, which are best done in private with a colleague. In this way, the manager or HR manager will be able to determine what problems prevent the employee from performing his or her duties consistently and conscientiously.

Chat with good news

A useful thing, especially now, when Ukrainians are bombarded with terrible news every day that exhausts the nervous system and makes it impossible to live normally, let alone work...
So, a common chat to discuss anything, not only work issues, bad customers, and payments, but simply a chat to support each other in difficult times, is a must-have for every team, and even more so for salespeople. It also has a positive effect on the involvement of all team members in work processes and increases the effectiveness of each team player.

Related training

Make sure that your employees have access to a library of knowledge, not only in your area of expertise, but also in general. For example, read self-development books or watch educational videos. This will help to switch their attention from purely professional duties to other things that will relieve their brains and promote personal development and professional development.
Alternatively, you can invite specialists to conduct internal masterclasses among employees. Such a bonus is a good motivational tool, especially for ambitious colleagues who want to advance their careers.

Periodic meetings with the head of the department

Sometimes, everything seems fine on the surface, employees are provided with all the necessary tools for work and leisure, but the situation does not change. In this case, the manager or HR specialist should periodically conduct mini-interviews with subordinates to identify problem areas. An employee may not be experiencing emotional burnout, but he or she may have difficulty communicating with colleagues or achieving results because ideas are not noticed. Or there are certain personal reasons why the salesperson's performance is suffering.

Establishing a healthy team climate

If you notice that things are not going well in your team, and there is often tension in the air, you should refer to the previous point and conduct individual interviews with employees. In this way you will find out what is the reason and why or because of whom conflict situations arise that prevent you from working and achieving common results.

Automate routines in an accounting or CRM programme

The most effective way to get rid of constant work stress is to set routine processes on autopilot. Order and customer accounting programs, usually CRM systems for business, do an excellent job of this task.
CRM in Torgsoft allows you to manage communication with customers and conduct sales in a single point - the accounting programme. No paperwork or accounting is required. Since all the functions of accounting for goods, customers, and sales are automatically configured in the program.
In addition, CRM will help you to easily and quickly integrate the existing database of goods that is in the accounting program with the online store and other business services. This will significantly speed up the work of the store and simplify the life of sellers.

Personal ways to avoid emotional burnout

Now let's talk about the problem from the employee's side and the actions that will help minimise it.
  • Take care of your physical health. No matter what, try to ensure that you get enough sleep, eat healthy, and exercise regularly to help maintain energy and performance.
  • Manage stress. Develop the ability to resist stress. Use relaxation techniques, such as deep breathing or meditation, to reduce stress levels.
  • Develop time management skills. Set priorities and plan your working hours to avoid overload. Understand your limits and learn to say no when you need a break.
  • Communicate with your management. Discuss your professional needs and work expectations with your managers. An open dialogue will reduce conflicts and improve the work environment.
  • Work on self-preservation. Find your own ways to deal with stress and relax outside work hours. Take up hobbies, spend time with family and friends, such as exercise, yoga, or attending events you enjoy. Don't read the news before going to bed.
  • Work in a team. Develop cooperation with colleagues. Communicate and share experiences, and offer support when needed.
