The printer does not print after changing or resetting the router: how to restore printing

A guide to restoring printing for network printers (LAN / Wi-Fi) after replacing a router, resetting network settings, or changing the internet provider.

This instruction involves changing the network settings of the printer, router, and Windows printing parameters, so it must be followed carefully. If you enter the wrong IP address, create the wrong port, or clear the print queue without understanding the cause of the failure, the printer may completely lose connection with the POS terminal or other workstations. Before making changes, we recommend recording the current printer IP address, port settings, and router configuration. If access to the network equipment is limited or printing is configured in a non-standard way, it is better to contact a system administrator.

When printing disappears after a network change

The problem occurs after:

  • Replacing the router

  • Resetting the router to factory settings

  • Changing the subnet (for example, from 192.168.0.x to 192.168.1.x)

  • Reinstalling Windows or drivers

  • Changing the Wi-Fi name (SSID) or password

In these cases, the printer receives a new IP address, but Windows and Torgsoft continue sending data to the old one.

How to understand that the problem is in the printer network settings

  • Documents accumulate in the queue but do not print.

  • The printer has the “Offline” / “Автономний” status.

  • The Printer selected is not valid or Connection timed out error appears in Torgsoft.

  • A test ping to the old IP address fails.

Why printing stops working after replacing the router

  1. Incorrect port IP address: Windows sends data to the old address.

  2. Dynamic IP address: the router changed the printer address via DHCP.

  3. Subnet change: network addressing changed globally.

  4. Stuck queue: old jobs block new ones.

  5. The firewall blocked the port.

How to restore network printer printing

Step 1. Find the current IP address of the printer

Use one of the options:

  1. Print a Self-Test receipt on the printer (usually by holding the Feed button while turning on the printer).

  2. Find the printer with a network scanner, for example Advanced IP Scanner.

  3. Check the DHCP client list in the router web interface.

Step 2. Update the printer IP port in Windows (critical)

Without this step, printing will not work even if Torgsoft is configured.

  1. Open Control Panel → Devices and Printers.

  2. Right-click the required printer → Printer Properties.

  3. Go to the Ports tab.

  4. Find the port with the checkmark next to it, usually Standard TCP/IP Port.

  5. Click Configure Port.

  6. In the “Printer Name or IP Address” field, enter the new IP address from Step 1.

  7. Click OK.

If the “Configure Port” button is inactive: create a new port: “Add Port” → “Standard TCP/IP Port” → Enter the new IP → Next.

Step 3. Reserve the IP address in the router

To prevent the problem from recurring the next day:

  1. Log in to the router settings.

  2. Open the DHCP Reservation section or Address Reservation.

  3. Bind the current IP address to the printer MAC address.

Step 4. Clear the print queue and restart the spooler

  1. Press Win + R → enter services.msc.

  2. Find the Print Spooler service.

  3. Click Restart.

  4. If this does not help, stop the service and delete files from C:\Windows\System32\spool\PRINTERS.

Step 5. Select the printer again in Torgsoft

  1. Open Settings → Printer Selection.

  2. Select the printers for receipts, labels and reports again in the drop-down lists.

  3. Click “Save” and run “Test Print”.

How to check that printing has been restored

  1. Click “Print Test Page” in the Windows printer properties.

  2. If the paper comes out, check receipt printing from Torgsoft.

  3. If printing still does not work, turn off the router for 30 seconds, turn it back on, restart the printer, and restart the computer.

How to avoid losing printing again

  • When replacing the router, ask the administrator to keep the same subnet, for example 192.168.0.x.

  • Do not use passive USB hubs without a power supply for printers.
