Types of barcode scanners

When choosing a scanner, it is worth paying attention to the scanning system — it determines how fast and under what conditions the scanner can work.

Laser scanner is one of the most budget-friendly, simple and common scanners. The laser scanner works based on the principle of reflection of a laser beam from the surface of a barcode: when the laser beam is pointed at a barcode, it is reflected from the black and white stripes on the barcode, creating a pattern of reflected light. The scanner's sensor reads the pattern and interprets it as a code, which is converted into digital information.

Laser scanners can be handheld, handheld or stationary. They can have different characteristics, such as different scanning speeds, resolutions, and types of interfaces. 

Laser scanners read linear 1D bar codes: UPC, Code 39, Code 128, EAN. 

Suitable for small store.

LED scanner uses LEDs to illuminate barcodes and photo sensors to read information. Unlike laser scanners, LED scanners use no lasers and have no moving parts, making them more reliable.

It is typically used to read linear one-dimensional bar codes such as EAN-13, UPC-A, Code 39, Code 128, and others.

It is also possible to scan 2D barcodes, such as QR codes or Data Matrix, with an LED scanner if it supports the appropriate formats and has a high enough resolution.

LED scanners can be portable or stationary and connect to a computer or other device via USB, Bluetooth or Wi-Fi.

The advantages of LED scanners are fast and accurate scanning, ease of use, reliability and durability.

Suitable for intensive trading.

Linear Image scanners or photo scanners read barcodes from different angles and distances, even with poor print quality or uneven surfaces. This type of scanner uses a matrix of photodiodes — CCD (Charge-Coupled Device) scanning technology to scan barcodes.

It is suitable for grocery stores, warehouses, production facilities, where it is necessary to read barcodes quickly and on damaged or worn labels. 

Radio-Coupled Device Scanner is a wireless barcode scanner that uses radio-frequency RF communication to transmit data between the scanner and a computer. This allows you to scan barcodes from a distance without having to bring each item to the scanner. 

Usually used for scanning goods over long distances or in hard-to-reach places.

Suitable for large logistic enterprises and production facilities where instant shipment of goods is needed.

Besides the reading system, scanners can be divided into types:

Desktop — classic scanners that lie near the cash register or are mounted on a stand.

Hand-held — ergonomic wired or wireless device for reading barcodes, which is convenient to hold in your hand.

Portable — small, wireless, lightweight scanners that connect to computers, mobile devices or POS terminals via Bluetooth or Wi-Fi. Convenient for use in large warehouses and overcounting.

Built-in scanners are stationary scanners that are built into the cash register and are mostly used in supermarkets. They are convenient because they scan barcodes at any angle.

Radio scanners, Bluetooth bar code scanners — wireless bar code scanners that connect to a computer or tablet via Bluetooth, Wi-Fi or radio frequency identification (RFID) to transmit the data of the read bar codes into the accounting program Torgsoft. Used in stores, warehouses and manufacturing where you need to read barcodes far away from your computer.

Ring scanners are usually attached to the index finger of the manager as a ring, so they are free to use both hands to collect merchandise or inventory. Ring scanners are wireless and transmit data to the accounting software in real time.
