What You Need for Store Inventory Management

To get acquainted with inventory management, prepare a Windows computer and the Torgsoft demo version. Start with a few products and a straightforward workflow: receive goods from a supplier, prepare them for sale, and sell them to a customer.

Choose a scanner, printers and other devices for specific operations. An initial check will help you make a list of equipment for your store and decide what to connect first.

Start with products and a workflow

Torgsoft supports product inventory management from purchasing through to sale to the customer. To get started, choose a few representative products: some with factory barcodes, some without, and, if needed, a product sold by weight.

1

Prepare the data

Gather product names, item numbers, barcodes, purchase prices and retail prices. Check whether staff use the same name for the same product.

2

Check receiving and sales

Enter the selected products and follow their path from purchase to sale. For an initial check, you can manage without a scanner: in Torgsoft, you can also select a product by its item number.

3

Note your needs

Note where code scanning, your own label, a paper document or weighing is needed. Discuss these operations with the sales associate before choosing devices.

Plan around daily work: who receives goods, who labels them and who serves customers. Different workstations may need different devices.

Which equipment to add as needed

A barcode scanner is useful if a sales associate looks up products by code during a sale. It makes searching the database easier. Before choosing one, determine which codes need to be scanned and whether staff need to step away from the checkout.

A label printer is needed for your own labeling. If a product has no factory barcode, Torgsoft can generate one and print it on a label. Decide in advance on the label size and the information it needs to contain.

A receipt printer is worth considering if customers need paper documents. In Torgsoft, it is used to print non-fiscal receipts; discuss the need for a fiscal receipt separately with an accountant or consultant.

Choose scales for products sold by weight, a cash drawer for keeping cash at the checkout, and a data collection terminal for collecting product barcodes and quantities, including during stocktaking.

Before buying

Check the specific model, connection method, compatibility with Torgsoft and whether an additional function is needed. For printers, also check the consumables.
