How to Bring Customers Back to Your Store

Working with regular customers

Give customers a clear reason to come back

Personal discounts, bonuses, promotions, mailings and gift certificates are different ways to encourage repeat purchases. Choose them to suit your range and your customers’ usual shopping habits.

A club discount and bonuses with a limited validity period are two separate loyalty rules. The first links a discount to regular purchases; the second sets the deadline by which a customer can use a reward. Start with rules that are easy to explain at the checkout.

Club discounts: set membership and renewal terms

Decide how much a customer must spend over a given period to qualify for a club discount. Separately define which purchases, and within what period, are required to retain membership status. This lets you explain both how to join and the terms for continued participation.

For example, for a cosmetics store, a useful guide may be the usual interval between purchases of personal care products. For clothing, take seasonality into account. These are examples to help you choose the terms: set the threshold and period to suit your own product range and the discount amount you can allow.

Torgsoft supports cumulative discounts. Before enabling the club option, confirm exactly how your required conditions for joining, renewing and ending membership will work.

Bonuses: explain expiry and returns

If you plan to limit how long bonuses can be used, decide on the period in advance and explain to customers which event starts the countdown. Customers should understand when a reward becomes available and by what date they should use it.

Also plan for returns: what should happen to bonuses earned on a purchase, and to bonuses used to pay for it? If restored bonuses will have a separate validity period, include it in the rules and check that this setting is available before launch.

Do not promise customers terms you have not yet verified. Ask a consultant to explain how the periods are calculated and how expired bonuses are deducted, using your scenario as an example.

What to prepare before launch

1

Write down the rules

Set out the club and bonus terms separately. Check that the amounts, periods and renewal conditions are clear without further explanation.

2

Assign responsibilities

Decide who will check whether the conditions are met and approve status changes. Agree on how staff will explain a lost discount or expired bonuses to a customer.

3

Check the scenarios

Review a purchase, membership renewal, failure to meet the conditions and a product return. Confirm which settings are needed for each case.

Clear rules help you work consistently with regular customers. First agree on the terms for customers, then check how they are implemented in the software and prepare your staff.
