Start with a polite greeting, find out what the customer needs, and listen to their answer. Clarify their budget, timeline, and requirements. Explain options in terms of their needs, compare relevant products, and give them time to decide.
For this kind of consultation, a salesperson should know the products, services, and store policies. Recommend a product that fits the customer's needs. Explain only verified product features and conditions of use.
Greet the customer and let them browse
Greet the customer politely and offer help. If they do not respond, let them browse the store at their own pace.
Sample dialogue
Salesperson: “Good afternoon. If you need help choosing, just let me know.”
Customer: “Thank you, I’ll have a look for now.”
Salesperson: “Of course.”
Find out their needs, budget, and timeline
Open-ended questions invite a detailed answer instead of a simple “yes” or “no.” Start by asking what the customer needs the product for. Then clarify any constraints.
- “What do you need the product for?”
- “What matters to you when using it?”
- “What budget do you have in mind?”
- “When do you need the product?”
- “What requirements does it need to meet?”
When selecting a product, consider the budget, timeline, whether it meets the requirements, and its availability. Compare options with these constraints in mind.
Listen without interrupting
Focus on the customer's answer. Let them finish their thought, then clarify anything needed to make a choice.
Sample dialogue
Customer: “I’m looking for a bag for my daily commute. I want to carry my work things in it.”
Salesperson: “What exactly do you plan to carry?”
Customer: “A laptop, documents, and a charger.”
Salesperson: “What are your laptop’s dimensions?”
Then select a bag based on the requirements they mentioned. Before recommending a specific option, check the relevant product details.
Explain how the product meets their needs
Link your recommendation to the customer's specific need. In your explanation, name their requirement, the product feature you have verified, and why it matters for their needs.
If a feature has limitations or applies only under certain conditions, explain them along with the recommendation. Do not promise features you cannot verify for the product in question. If the necessary information is unavailable, check it before answering.
Sample dialogue
Customer: “Will this option work for what I need?”
Salesperson: “Let’s clarify how you’ll use it and check this model’s features.”
Compare two relevant options
Offer to briefly compare two products side by side. Explain the differences in terms of the requirements the customer has already mentioned: budget, timeline, suitability for their needs, and availability.
Sample dialogue
Salesperson: “Would you like to compare these two options against your requirements?”
Customer: “Yes. The most important thing is that the product works for what I need and stays within my budget.”
For each option, explain the verified features needed for the comparison. State any known limitations and conditions right away.
Clarify their concern and give them time to decide
If the customer is unsure, ask what is still unclear. Once you have clarified the reason for their hesitation and provided an explanation, give them time to think it over.
Sample dialogue
Customer: “I need to think about it.”
Salesperson: “Is there anything else you’d like to clarify about these options?”
Customer: “It’s all clear. I’d like to take some time to decide.”
Salesperson: “Of course. If you have any questions, just let me know.”
Prepare salespeople for customer consultations
Train staff to know the product range, services, and store policies. During a practice conversation, check whether the salesperson can:
- greet customers politely and offer help;
- ask open-ended questions about their needs and constraints;
- listen without interrupting;
- link a recommendation to the customer's needs;
- explain verified product features and conditions;
- briefly compare two relevant options;
- answer questions and give the customer time to decide.
