Retail Business Ideas

42 ways to organize a promotion in a store: what to offer customers, how to calculate costs, which conditions to check, and what Torgsoft can automate.

A promotion should serve a specific purpose: attract new customers, increase the number of items per receipt, sell remaining stock, or bring customers back. Offering a discount does not automatically mean that the store will earn more.

Important:

the «Marketing → Promotions» mode and certain marketing features may be unavailable in the basic Torgsoft Start configuration. Some scenarios require an additional paid option or website configuration. Check your license before launching a promotion.

The examples cover both automatic discounts and activities that a store organizes independently. For each one, it is important to consider customer needs, business costs, and the actual capabilities of the inventory management software.

How to Choose a Promotion Based on Your Store's Objectives

ObjectiveExampleWhat to Check
Increase the transaction value Bundle, purchase amount threshold, complementary product Number of items and gross profit per receipt
Clear remaining stock Discount on seasonal or slow-moving products Stock levels, inventory turnover, and markdown amount
Bring customers back Bonuses, birthday offers, personalized offers Repeat purchases and incentive costs
Attract new customers Refer a friend, partner promotion New customers and customer acquisition cost
Support online sales Pre-orders, free shipping threshold Paid orders, shipping, and returns
Before Launching

Calculate the cost of goods, discounts, shipping, gifts, commissions, expected returns, and product assortment restrictions. Test the promotion on a sample receipt both with and without a discount card. The terms communicated to customers must match the calculation at checkout.

Increase the Number of Items and the Transaction Value

These promotions encourage customers to add another item to their purchase or buy related products together.

PROMOTION 01

Discount on the Second Item

When a customer chooses one product, a discount on the second item may encourage them to buy an extra one or a complementary product immediately. This type of offer is suitable for socks, cosmetics, stationery, and other items people purchase regularly. With expensive products, an unplanned second purchase is less likely, so the promotion mechanism should reflect actual demand.

For example, an accessories store could offer a 30% discount on the second item. The price tag and promotional message should explain whether the discount applies to the second item scanned or the cheaper of the two. According to Robert Cialdini's principles, clear and honest terms help maintain trust: if customers discover restrictions only at checkout, they perceive the offer differently from what they expected.

In Torgsoft, this scenario can be configured in the promotions mode using a discount on a single item: you can specify the number of items, product selection conditions, and discount amount. Before launching, conduct test sales with different prices and discount cards. Afterward, compare not only the average transaction value but also the profit generated by each transaction. Selling more items does not necessarily make a promotion profitable.

PROMOTION 02

Third Item at a Discount or Free

A «three for the price of two» offer is suitable for products that customers use regularly: socks, notebooks, hygiene products, or small household essentials. It helps sell more units during a single visit but also changes the revenue generated by each item. Therefore, the first step is to check whether the markup is sufficient to cover the free item.

The easiest way to explain the terms is with a specific example: the customer takes three products from a designated group, and the cheapest one is offered at a special price. Mark Ritson recommends starting with the customer segment and its behavior rather than applying a universal promotion mechanism to the entire assortment. For a Ukrainian retail store, this means testing the promotion in one category instead of reducing prices throughout the store.

In Torgsoft, a quantity-based condition can be combined with a discount on a specific receipt item. If the promotion provides a 100% discount on a product, separately check how it should be recorded on the fiscal receipt and in inventory accounting. Compare the number of bundles sold, the total value of discounts, and gross profit with sales of the same products before the promotion.

PROMOTION 03

Progressive Quantity Discount

A progressive discount changes depending on the number of units purchased. For example, the first item is sold at its regular price, the second with a 10% discount, and the third with a 20% discount. This format can work well in lingerie, accessories, or stationery stores, where customers often choose several similar items during one visit.

Understanding the final amount matters more to customers than remembering a sequence of percentages. One practical conclusion from Daniel Kahneman's research into decision-making is to reduce the complexity of choices. Therefore, show a specific example of a receipt in hryvnias alongside the rules. Avoid situations where the phrase «up to 20% off» creates the expectation that all three items will be discounted by 20%.

Torgsoft provides a promotion with a separate discount for each item based on its position in the sequence. Before publishing the offer, check the order in which items are added, partial returns, and interactions with other discounts. Evaluate the overall economics of the transaction: sometimes selling more units results in lower profit if discount levels were chosen without proper calculations.

PROMOTION 04

Discount Based on the Transaction Amount

A discount triggered by reaching a specified purchase amount encourages customers to add another needed product to their basket. It is suitable for stores that already know their average transaction value and where customers can easily add items to their orders. If a customer typically spends 750 hryvnias, a threshold of 900 hryvnias is worth testing; a condition starting at 2,000 hryvnias may be too far above the usual purchase amount.

First, examine the distribution of transaction values, then calculate several possible thresholds. Mark Ritson emphasizes the importance of real customer data: an attractive round number is not a valid pricing argument. On a shelf or in the shopping cart, you can show how many hryvnias remain until the threshold is reached, but you should not encourage customers to buy unnecessary small items solely to obtain a discount.

In Torgsoft, this scenario is implemented through the «By Amount» promotion with a condition based on the sale amount. Consider an important calculation detail: the threshold may be checked against the products' list prices rather than the amount after all discounts. Test several receipt variations and the rules for combining promotions. After launching, compare the increase in purchase value with the cost of discounts provided.

PROMOTION 05

Free Gift with a Purchase Above a Specified Amount

A free gift with a purchase above a specified amount helps increase the transaction value without changing the price of the main product. For a bookstore, this could be a quality notebook or bookmark with orders over 1,200 hryvnias; for a cosmetics store, it could be a product sample relevant to the purchase. The gift should reflect the customer's interests; otherwise, its perceived value quickly disappears.

According to the principle of reciprocity described by Robert Cialdini, a thoughtful gesture works better when it does not appear to be a formal exchange for a compulsory purchase. Do not promise a «valuable gift» if it is simply a random inexpensive item. Select the gift assortment in advance, calculate its cost, determine the available quantity, and inform customers how long the offer will last.

In Torgsoft, a promotion can track whether the purchase amount threshold has been reached, but issuing the gift itself requires proper inventory and fiscal documentation. Do not assume that a zero price will be recorded automatically in the accounting system. Allocate separate stock for gifts, verify their actual write-off, and compare the additional profit with the cost of incentives.

PROMOTION 06

Bundle at a Special Price

A bundle helps customers obtain everything they need for a specific task in one purchase. In a hardware store, this could include paint, a roller, and masking tape; in an electronics store, a printer, cable, and paper. Customers save time searching for compatible items, while the store sells several products through one clear offer.

Philip Kotler considers the value of an offer in terms of the need it satisfies. This is particularly important for bundles: a set of random leftover products does not become useful simply because a promotional price tag has been attached to it. Show what the bundle contains, how much the products cost separately, and the final price. Before launching, check the compatibility and availability of every component.

In Torgsoft, a ready-made set can be created using «Product Assembly», while a conditional discount on several product groups can be configured through the relevant promotion rules. These are different mechanisms, so the choice depends on whether the bundle is sold as a separate product. Check the deduction of components from inventory, returns of individual items, and how the price appears on the receipt. Evaluate results based on bundle sales and profit, not merely the number of bundles sold.

PROMOTION 07

Discount on a Complementary Product

A discount on a complementary product works when the second purchase naturally complements the first. You can offer paper with a printer, a care product with shoes, or suitable treats with pet food. Such a promotion does not require a substantial discount on the main product, while customers receive a reminder about something they may genuinely need.

Byron Sharp's research emphasizes the importance of a product's physical availability. If a care product is located at the opposite end of the store, a discount announcement may not help. Place related products next to each other, give sales staff a brief explanation of compatibility, and avoid pushing an add-on that does not suit the purchase. An online store can apply the same approach on the product page.

In Torgsoft, you can configure a triggering product group and a discount on a complementary group when products from both groups are included in the sale. Check that the rule does not apply to incompatible products that happen to belong to a broad category. Compare the proportion of receipts containing complementary products before and after the promotion, as well as the additional profit after accounting for the discount.

PROMOTION 08

Wholesale Pricing Based on Quantity

Quantity-based wholesale pricing is suitable for stores that serve retail customers, tradespeople, and small businesses at the same time. For example, packaging materials may have one price for 1–9 units, a lower price for 10–49 units, and an even lower price for 50 or more. For customers, this is a clear advantage of purchasing in bulk; for the store, it is a way to accommodate different order volumes.

Mark Ritson recommends defining customer segments by their needs and behavior rather than merely by formal audience labels. Wholesale terms should therefore be offered where customers genuinely purchase large quantities. Show the unit price for each range, specify whether different product codes can be combined, and avoid setting a threshold that exceeds the target group's normal requirements.

In Torgsoft, automatic price switching is handled by the additional «Wholesale Pricing Policy» option. It allows you to define quantity thresholds and corresponding price levels. Before launching, check how prices are calculated for different customers and how they interact with other discounts. Important indicators include the number of wholesale orders, profit margin, and repeat purchases.

PROMOTION 09

Discounts on Selected Products

Discounts on selected products allow a store to manage demand without reducing prices across the entire assortment. This might be a small selection of cosmetics, seasonal accessories, or products from a new supplier. Customers can more easily notice a specific attractive offer than work through an announcement of «discounts on everything» that actually contains numerous exceptions.

According to Byron Sharp's approach, a product should be easy to find where customers look for it. Choose a limited list of items with sufficient markup, display both regular and promotional prices on the shelf, and check that prices match those on the website. Avoid creating an artificial previous price: such savings appear convincing only until customers notice the discrepancy.

In Torgsoft, a discount can be configured through «Marketing → Promotions» by specifying the period, product group, and retail locations. Product-level discounts may be used for individual items. Before launching, verify the list of participating products and situations where a customer has a discount card. After the promotion, compare sales of the selected group and the total discounts provided with the previous period.

Clear Remaining Stock and Manage Demand Over Time

Promotions help sell specific stock or shift part of customer demand to less busy hours.

PROMOTION 10

Seasonal Clearance Sale

A seasonal clearance sale allows a store to recover some of the money invested in a collection and free up space for new arrivals. It is most often needed by clothing, footwear, outdoor equipment, and seasonal home goods stores. However, not every older item needs to be sold immediately at the maximum discount: some products may be in demand again next season.

First, select items with low sales velocity, high stock levels, and clearly established costs. Divide them into several groups based on the required markdown level instead of applying the same percentage to everything. Les Binet and Peter Field highlight the difference between short-term activation and long-term brand value: frequent storewide clearance sales can teach customers to wait for the next discount.

Torgsoft's «Slow-Moving Inventory Analysis» can help: its results allow you to select items for price changes or promotions. Keep in mind that the analysis itself does not determine the optimal discount percentage. Monitor remaining stock after the sale, the amount of cash recovered from inventory, and actual profit so that you do not confuse rapid inventory clearance with profitable trading.

PROMOTION 11

Special Price on Products from a Specific Manufacturer

A promotion on products from a particular manufacturer is appropriate when the store has received special purchasing terms or is promoting a new brand together with a supplier. In this case, customers see a specific offer, while the store does not have to finance the entire discount from its own markup. This is especially useful for cosmetics, household chemicals, tools, and groceries.

Before launching, agree with the supplier on the list of product codes, dates, advertising materials, and the method of discount reimbursement, if applicable. Research by Les Binet and Peter Field shows that short-term sales incentives should be combined with noticeable communication. Therefore, you need not only a new price tag but also clear information about how these products benefit customers.

In Torgsoft, products for a promotion can be selected by manufacturer or supplier using the appropriate groups and filters, while discounts can be assigned to the selected assortment. Check the exact selection method in your software version. Record supplier reimbursements separately and compare the profit from the promotional batch with the cost of promoting it.

PROMOTION 12

Sale of Products Approaching Their Expiration Date

Products approaching their expiration date are often better sold at a lower price than written off later. For a grocery store, these might include certain batches of dairy products, baked goods, or other perishable items. However, discounts should apply only to products that are still suitable and safe for sale.

Check batches daily, determine the period during which they can realistically be purchased, and clearly indicate the expiration date. Mark Ritson recommends first understanding the reason for weak demand before changing the offer. If a product sells poorly because of its placement, improve the display; if the problem is the approaching expiration date, a discount may be appropriate.

In Torgsoft, you can change prices or assign promotional conditions to selected products, but selecting specific batches and monitoring their expiration dates must be organized separately. Do not promise automatic detection of every product requiring a markdown. Track the number of write-offs before and after changing the process, as well as profit from products successfully sold before expiration.

PROMOTION 13

«Happy Hours»

«Happy Hours» help support sales when a store usually receives fewer visitors. For example, on weekdays between 11:00 and 13:00, a store can offer special prices on several product categories. The objective is not to reduce revenue during peak hours but to give some customers an additional reason to visit during quieter periods.

Analyze sales by hour for at least several typical weeks, excluding holidays and unusual days. According to Binet and Field's approach, short-term offers should serve a specific measurable objective. Explain the schedule to customers in advance and maintain it long enough to observe the results. Do not change the hours every day without a reason.

In Torgsoft, the «By Period» promotion settings allow you to specify days of the week and times. After launching, check that the correct time is applied at checkout and how the promotion interacts with other discounts. Compare sales during the target hours with comparable days before the promotion: if additional customers simply move their visits from the evening to lunchtime, the overall effect may be small.

PROMOTION 14

Day-of-the-Week Promotion

A promotion on a particular day of the week is useful when customer traffic is uneven. A grocery store might designate Tuesday as a day for baking ingredients, while a household goods store could make Thursday a day for cleaning products. A clear, recurring theme helps customers plan their visits and eliminates the need for the store to constantly invent new rules.

Byron Sharp studies how brands come to mind in specific purchasing situations. A recurring offer can serve as such a reminder if its name, category, and day remain recognizable. Choose a product that people actually buy on that day, check its availability, and communicate the rules consistently on shelves, social media, and in newsletters.

In Torgsoft, promotions can be restricted by days of the week, product groups, and retail locations. Set an end date for the test even if you eventually want to make the offer permanent. Compare sales on the selected day and across the entire week: an increase on Tuesday may be accompanied by a decline on Wednesday, so looking at only one day is insufficient.

PROMOTION 15

Short Promotion Lasting 24–48 Hours

A short promotion lasting one or two days is suitable for a limited batch, store opening, or launch of a new collection. Its strength lies in a clearly defined occasion that customers can easily relate to their plans. However, if a store announces the «last day of discounts» every week, that promise quickly loses its meaning and credibility.

Robert Cialdini describes how scarcity influences decisions, but this principle does not justify invented time limits. State the actual start and end dates, available product quantities, and participation conditions. Ukrainian customers also need to know whether the promotion is available online or only in the physical store. Prepare communications about the short-term offer in advance.

In Torgsoft, the promotional period is set through the «By Period» promotion, while the product assortment is restricted through the relevant groups and conditions. Test the automatic end of the promotion using a sample receipt and verify prices after the promotional period expires. Compare results not only with the previous day but also with the corresponding period of the week, accounting for purchases that may have been shifted to the sale period.

PROMOTION 16

Limited-Stock Offer

Limited stock can be a legitimate reason for a special offer if the store has received a small batch of products or does not plan to reorder them. Customers need to understand whether the product is available and how many units they can purchase. The restriction should not turn into a claim of scarcity that does not actually exist.

Cialdini points out that genuine scarcity increases the perceived importance of a choice. However, it is better to explain the reason directly: «20 sets remaining from this shipment», provided that the figure has been verified. Before publishing the offer, distribute the products among stores, synchronize inventory levels with the website, and establish what to do if the stock sells out before the advertised end of the promotion.

Torgsoft helps monitor inventory levels and sales across retail locations. At the same time, not every marketing restriction, such as «no more than two units per customer», automatically follows from a configured discount — this must be checked separately. In the post-promotion report, distinguish between the quantity sold, products that were unavailable to customers, and cases where advertising continued after the stock had been exhausted.

Bring Customers Back and Maintain Loyalty

Personalized offers and bonuses are appropriate when the store has access to purchase history and can track repeat sales.

PROMOTION 17

Discount for a Specific Customer Group

Special terms for a particular customer group make sense when that group has a specific need. A stationery store might prepare an offer for teachers before the start of the school year, while a children's store could create one for members of its club program. This is more targeted than a general discount for everyone, but the verification process for eligibility should not be unnecessarily complicated.

Mark Ritson recommends building segmentation around differences in needs and behavior. Therefore, before launching, find out which products customers in the selected group already purchase and what they genuinely need. Announce simple eligibility criteria and avoid collecting unnecessary personal information. If the discount depends on presenting a document, explain this before checkout rather than after the customer has selected the products.

In Torgsoft, promotions can be configured for selected customers, while cards and discount policies can be used for ongoing terms. Check how personalized and general promotions interact so that customers understand the final price. After launching, compare repeat purchases, discount amounts, and revenue from the selected group, remembering that simply issuing a card does not prove that the customer uses it.

PROMOTION 18

Birthday Discount

A birthday greeting can serve as a relevant reminder of the store if the customer previously provided contact details and agreed to receive messages. People do not necessarily plan to shop on their birthday itself, so it is often more convenient to allow several days to use the offer. Children's stores may also prepare offers based on a child's age if they have the relevant data and a lawful basis for using it.

Fred Reichheld associates loyalty with the quality of relationships rather than rewards alone. In store practice, this means avoiding excessive formal greetings and not pressuring customers to spend money urgently. A small discount on a category the customer has shown interest in may be more appropriate than a large discount on an unrelated product. Communicate the terms and validity period immediately.

Torgsoft includes a birthday discount in its marketing settings. Automatic or bulk customer notifications may require a separate messaging option and an appropriate legal basis for using contact information. Before launching, check how dates and restrictions work. Afterward, determine how many recipients returned to make a purchase and whether the profit from those purchases covers the discount costs.

PROMOTION 19

Loyal Customer Club

A loyal customer club can encourage regular visits without constant storewide sales. Members receive a specific benefit after spending a set amount in the store over a defined period. This is appropriate for cosmetics, children's products, clothing, and other categories where repeat purchases are a normal part of customer behavior.

Before launching, assess customers' actual purchase frequency and average spending. Fred Reichheld recommends focusing on relationship quality and actual repeat purchases rather than simply counting issued cards. Therefore, the membership threshold should be achievable and the benefit easy to understand. If membership can expire due to inactivity, explain this before registration without hiding it in fine print.

In Torgsoft, this model is supported by the additional «Discount Club» option, which tracks purchase amounts, membership periods, and membership rules. Check how customers learn about their status and what happens when they lose it. To evaluate the results, compare members' purchase frequency before and after joining, the discounts they receive, and their overall contribution to profit.

PROMOTION 20

Cumulative Discount

A cumulative discount increases as the customer's total purchase amount grows. For example, after reaching the first threshold, the customer receives 3%, and after reaching the next, 5%. This format is suitable for stores with regular sales, but it does not guarantee more frequent visits: some customers would have purchased the same amount even without the incentive.

Mark Ritson recommends checking actual differences in audience behavior. For a cumulative discount, this means choosing two or three achievable levels and calculating which customers receive a genuine incentive and which simply pay less for their usual purchases. Explain which purchases count toward the accumulated amount, whether returns are deducted, and whether the card discount can be combined with other promotions.

Torgsoft has a «Discount Policy» feature for configuring purchase amount thresholds and the corresponding card rules. It is important to test transitions between levels at checkout and compatibility with temporary offers in advance. Analyze not only growth in program membership but also margins, purchase frequency, and changes in customer behavior after receiving a higher discount.

PROMOTION 21

Purchase Reward Points

A rewards program returns part of the purchase value in the form of points that can be used to pay for future products under the store's rules. It is suitable for businesses where customers return regularly, such as cosmetics, pet supplies, and children's products. Unlike an immediate discount, the customer receives an incentive to use during a future visit.

First, establish a clear conversion rate for points, when they are credited, and the limits on their use. Customers should know whether they can pay for an entire receipt with points, how product returns are handled, and whether any exceptions apply. Fred Reichheld emphasizes that a rewards system cannot replace quality service. Therefore, points should complement a convenient shopping experience rather than compensate for persistent problems.

In Torgsoft, the accumulation and redemption of points are configured through the discount policy, and point transactions can be tracked. Before launching, test point accrual, partial payment, and refunds using sample sales. After several purchase cycles, examine what proportion of credited points customers redeem and whether visit frequency has increased without reducing gross profit.

PROMOTION 22

Reward Points with an Expiration Date

Reward points with a limited validity period give customers a clear reason to return within a certain time. For example, in a cosmetics store, a reward may remain valid until the expected time to replenish a product. However, an excessively short validity period often conflicts with customers' actual purchasing habits and creates frustration rather than encouraging a return visit.

Les Binet and Peter Field distinguish between immediate sales stimulation and long-term brand building. Therefore, time-limited points should be used in moderation, with their benefits explained clearly and without turning every visit into a race against the expiration date. Set the validity period based on the category's purchase frequency, remind customers before expiration, and do not change the rules after points have been credited.

Torgsoft provides an additional «Limited-Time Bonuses» option for this purpose. Customer reminders may require separate messaging configuration and an appropriate legal basis for contacting customers. Evaluate how many people used their rewards, how many points remained unused, and whether a new purchase occurred earlier than it would have without the promotion.

PROMOTION 23

Extra Reward Points for a Specific Category

Increased reward point accrual for one category helps draw attention to selected products without directly reducing their price in the current transaction. For example, a home goods store might offer additional points for care products on weekends. However, such a promotion makes sense only if customers understand the future reward and the store already operates a standard rewards program.

Mark Ritson recommends testing different offers on specific segments to understand their actual impact. For a small store, it is sufficient to start with one product group and a short period rather than introducing special points for dozens of categories. Set a maximum accrual limit in advance, state the redemption period, and explain why the points are beneficial for this particular purchase.

Torgsoft includes a bonus policy and promotion mechanisms, but the ability to apply a specific multiplier to a particular category and time period should be verified in the installed version and configuration. Do not promise automatic calculations before checking a test receipt. Measure results through increased sales of the target group, liabilities arising from issued points, and profit after their redemption.

PROMOTION 24

Milestone Customer Discount

A milestone customer discount turns a sale at a predetermined position in the sequence into a small event. For example, every hundredth transaction may receive a 10% discount under rules established in advance. This type of promotion is convenient during a store opening or a festive week when there is a clear occasion for the event.

Robert Cialdini describes the role of unexpected rewards in creating a positive perception of an interaction. However, randomness and goodwill should not replace transparent rules. Explain which transactions qualify, how their sequence is determined, and whether employees can receive the discount. Do not allow sales staff to manually select a «milestone» customer, even with the best intentions.

Torgsoft provides a separate «Milestone Customer Discount» mode with configurable frequency based on sales transactions or invoices. Before launching, test it using sample operations and ensure that the entire team understands the rules consistently. Evaluate not the number of smiles at checkout but the cost of discounts provided and total sales during the event.

PROMOTION 25

Personalized Offer for Inactive Customers

A personalized offer helps bring back customers who have not visited the store for a long time. If someone previously purchased pet food regularly but has not returned for several months, information about new products in that category may be relevant to them. A general storewide discount is unlikely to be as useful as an offer related to their previous choices.

Mark Ritson recommends working with behavioral segments without inventing reasons for their behavior in the absence of data. Therefore, a list of customers who have made no purchases in 90 days is only the starting point for analysis, not proof that they have switched to a competitor. Prepare a short message with a specific reason to return, do not conceal the terms, and do not send advertising messages without an appropriate legal basis.

In Torgsoft, «Customer Activity Analysis» can be used to identify such customers, after which an offer can be created for the selected group. Notifications may require the «Bulk Customer Messaging» option. Compare the number of returning customers, the costs of contacting them and providing discounts, and whether those customers made another purchase after their initial return.

PROMOTION 26

Gift Certificates

A gift certificate is appropriate when a customer wants to give someone a present but does not know the recipient's exact size, preferred model, or taste. This is common in bookstores, cosmetics stores, clothing shops, and jewelry stores. A certificate reduces the risk of choosing the wrong gift and allows the recipient to select something suitable independently.

Cialdini's principle of reciprocity can also be applied to gifts: their value increases when the recipient's interests are taken into account. Offer several denominations, explain the validity period, and clarify whether partial redemption is allowed. During the holiday season, display information about gift certificates near checkout and on the website, but do not hide restrictions in fine print on the back of the card.

Torgsoft offers a separate additional «Gift Certificates» option that helps manage denominations, balances, and redemption. Before launching, check the rules for partial payment, returns, and expiration in accordance with legal requirements. For the business, it is important to monitor not only certificate sales but also subsequent redemption and the accounting of obligations to certificate holders.

Attract New Customers and Partners

Referrals and partnerships can bring in people who have never purchased from the store before.

PROMOTION 27

Offer for New Customers

An offer for new customers helps introduce people to a store they have not visited before. It is appropriate when opening a retail location, launching a website, or expanding into a new neighborhood. A discount can lower the barrier to making a first purchase, but it does not, by itself, explain why customers should return to this particular store next time.

Byron Sharp emphasizes the importance of reaching new and infrequent buyers for brand growth. Therefore, do not limit communications to the existing customer database. Choose a straightforward product category where newcomers can evaluate the store with little risk, while also ensuring that loyal customers do not feel they are paying more because of their long-standing loyalty.

In Torgsoft, a promotion can be activated using a control barcode or applied to selected customers. However, the software may not automatically recognize a «first purchase» across all physical and online sales channels in every configuration — this must be verified. Measure the number of new customers, their acquisition cost, and subsequent purchases; otherwise, the results will be reduced to the number of redeemed coupons.

PROMOTION 28

«Refer a Friend»

The «Refer a Friend» promotion uses recommendations from people who already know the store and are willing to recommend it to others. A new customer receives a benefit on their first purchase, while the person who made the referral receives a reward after a confirmed sale. This mechanism is particularly suitable for stores with repeat purchases, where customers have had time to evaluate the service and products.

Fred Reichheld connects recommendations with genuine trust rather than the number of promotional codes distributed. Therefore, rewards should not be paid simply because a friend registers; it is better to award them after a paid purchase. Define what qualifies as a new customer, how limits on the number of referrals will work, and what happens if an order is returned.

Torgsoft provides an additional «Refer a Friend» promotion option for this mechanism: it works with individual codes and referral rewards. Before launching, verify the current rules for reward accrual, returns, and restrictions in your software version. Compare the cost of rewards with the profit generated by referred customers rather than simply counting the number of codes issued.

PROMOTION 29

Joint Promotion with a Neighboring Business

A joint promotion with another business introduces customers to two stores whose products naturally complement each other. For example, a bookstore visitor might receive a coupon for coffee at a nearby café, while a flower shop customer could receive an offer from a local gift-wrapping workshop. The important thing is that the partnership reflects people's actual habits rather than being a random exchange of advertising.

Byron Sharp's research places considerable emphasis on brand availability in purchasing situations. A partnership follows the same logic: customers encounter another store precisely when they may need its products or services. Agree on concise rules, the promotion period, the value of the benefit, and how coupons will be validated. Determine who pays for the discount and how partners will exchange information without compromising customer privacy.

In Torgsoft, you can create your own promotion activated by a corresponding code or use another permitted method of verifying discount eligibility. However, the software does not automatically handle all financial settlements between independent businesses simply because a coupon is used. Each partner must separately monitor its own sales, reward costs, and the number of customers genuinely attracted through the joint offer.

PROMOTION 30

Partner Rewards for Referred Customers

Ongoing partner rewards are appropriate when customers frequently come through recommendations from specific professionals. For example, an interior designer might refer a client to a lighting store, while a renovation contractor could direct customers to a building materials supplier. Unlike a one-time promotion for friends, this approach requires systematic tracking of transactions, accrued rewards, and settlements with partners.

Mark Ritson recommends evaluating each customer acquisition channel based on its actual economics. Therefore, before beginning a partnership, agree on which event triggers a reward: an inquiry, an issued invoice, or a completed paid sale. Establish rules for partial returns and verify whether the transaction remains profitable after paying the partner's commission. The number of referrals means little without corresponding sales figures.

Torgsoft offers an additional «Referral Program» option for this scenario, allowing customers to be linked to partners and rewards to be recorded. Before starting, check the specific procedures for recording payments and settlements. For analysis, compare revenue, profit, and repeat purchases from partner-referred customers with the results of other customer acquisition methods.

Manage Orders and Delivery

Promotions for online retail must be tested throughout the entire order process — from the product page to actual delivery.

PROMOTION 31

Pre-Orders for New Products

Pre-orders are useful when a product has not yet arrived, but the store wants to assess demand. This could be a new printing of a book, a seasonal clothing collection, or an electronics model with limited availability. Customers gain the opportunity to reserve the product they need, while the business owner receives a more reliable purchasing signal than ordinary product page views.

Les Binet and Peter Field describe the role of short-term activities in sales, but pre-orders also require building awareness of a new product in advance. Show photographs, specifications, payment terms, and the expected delivery timeframe. If the date depends on the manufacturer or carrier, state this explicitly. Separately explain how prepayments will be refunded if the shipment is delayed or canceled.

In Torgsoft, customer order management and invoice-based sales are used for this purpose; online orders can be received through the appropriate integration. Check how products are reserved and prepayments are recorded to avoid selling the same promised unit to two customers. Once the shipment arrives, compare the number of paid pre-orders with actual completed purchases and refunds.

PROMOTION 32

Incomplete Order Reminder

An incomplete online order does not always mean that the customer needed a discount. They may have encountered an unexpected shipping cost, been unable to find a suitable payment method, or postponed their decision. Therefore, automatically sending a message with a promotional code should not be the store's first response: sometimes it is more profitable to eliminate the inconvenience that caused the customer to abandon the cart.

Research by the Baymard Institute examines the reasons customers abandon purchases during checkout in detail. For a Ukrainian online store, the starting point should be transparent total pricing, a clear choice of shipping providers, and a short checkout form. After that, a single unobtrusive reminder can be sent with current product availability and a link to the shopping cart, provided there is an appropriate legal basis for contacting the customer.

Torgsoft can manage invoices, orders, and payments, but abandoned cart tracking and automated message sequences generally depend on the e-commerce platform or a separate integration. These capabilities should not be presented as a standard promotion feature of the inventory management software. Evaluate the proportion of completed orders and the reasons for abandonment before and after making changes, separately accounting for the cost of promotional codes provided.

PROMOTION 33

Free Shipping Above a Specified Order Amount

Free shipping above a certain order amount can encourage customers to add a needed product to their cart. However, shipping remains an expense for the business owner even if the customer does not pay for it separately. Therefore, this promotion is profitable only when the additional profit covers carrier services and packaging, rather than merely increasing the value of orders placed.

The Baymard Institute emphasizes the importance of transparent costs during checkout. Display the free shipping threshold on the product page and in the shopping cart, not only immediately before payment. If shipping costs the store an average of 85 hryvnias, calculate how much additional gross profit is needed to cover it. Do not set the threshold arbitrarily simply because a round number looks attractive.

Torgsoft can manage orders and work with carrier integrations, but an automatic free shipping rule based on order amount is often configured on the website. In a physical store, this may require separate delivery cost accounting. After launching, compare changes in the average order value, the proportion of deliveries paid for by the store, and profit after transportation expenses.

Organize an Event, Contest, or Social Initiative

Not every marketing activity comes down to a discount at checkout. These scenarios require proper organization, cost accounting, and clear rules.

PROMOTION 34

Product Tasting or Demonstration

A tasting or demonstration helps sell products whose qualities are difficult to evaluate from their packaging. A grocery store might offer customers a sample of a new cheese, while a tool store could demonstrate how a device works in practice. Customers gain firsthand experience before deciding to buy, and sales staff can answer questions that an ordinary price tag cannot address.

Robert Cialdini describes reciprocity as one of the mechanisms of human behavior, but a tasting should not become a form of psychological pressure. Invite customers to try a product without any obligation to buy, and ensure cleanliness, safety, and clear information about its ingredients. It is better to organize a short demonstration of one product with a trained employee than to distribute numerous samples without explaining their characteristics.

Torgsoft does not have a separate automated action to «conduct a tasting». The software can record product sales, account for samples used, and analyze the results after the event. Separate the cost of samples from products sold to customers and check whether sales of the demonstrated product actually changed. An increase in total revenue on the event day does not, by itself, prove its effectiveness.

PROMOTION 35

Creative Challenge Contest

A contest involving a creative challenge can encourage people to show how they use the store's products. For a home goods store, participants might submit photographs of an organized workspace; for a culinary ingredients store, they could submit an original recipe. Such materials can sometimes benefit other customers, provided the contest does not pressure participants into creating fabricated positive reviews.

Fred Reichheld connects trust with genuine customer experiences. Therefore, establish the task, evaluation criteria, deadlines, and prizes before the contest begins. Explain who selects the winner and whether submitted photographs may be used in advertising. If you plan to publish participants' names or images, obtain appropriate consent and do not make it a hidden condition of participation.

The contest itself is organized in the store or on an external platform. Torgsoft can help account for prizes, products, and related expenses, but it will not select winners based on creative criteria. After the contest, evaluate not only the reach of publications but also the quality of submissions, new inquiries, and actual sales, provided they can be reliably attributed to the event.

PROMOTION 36

Reward for a Review or Useful Content

A reward for an honest review can help a small store collect customer experiences and identify service shortcomings. However, it is important to distinguish between asking customers to share their opinions and purchasing positive ratings. For example, a store may offer a small token of appreciation for a detailed description of how a product is used, provided this does not violate the rules of the platform where the review is published.

Robert Cialdini explains the influence of social proof: people value the opinions of other customers. This is precisely why fake or paid five-star ratings damage trust. Do not require a «positive review» as a condition for a discount, do not conceal compensation where disclosure is required, and obtain consent before using customer photographs or stories in your own materials.

In Torgsoft, an issued reward can be recorded as a discount or coupon under the established rules, but the software does not verify the content or authenticity of an external review. Organize this verification outside the system and retain only the necessary data. When evaluating the results, what matters more is whether reviews helped resolve problems and explain products than the total number of new ratings.

PROMOTION 37

Collectible Stickers or Cards

Collectible stickers or cards turn repeat purchases into a clear sequence: for example, after purchasing six coffees, a customer receives the next drink on special terms. This works for products and services that are consumed regularly. For a clothing store where customers make only a few purchases per year, such a mechanism may be too slow and uninteresting.

Fred Reichheld emphasizes the value of long-term customer relationships. Rewards should be achievable within customers' normal purchasing patterns; otherwise, the program merely promises a benefit that almost nobody receives. Explain in advance which purchases count, what to do if a card is lost, and how customers can check the number of stamps or marks they have collected. Avoid complicating the rules with different exceptions for every product.

Torgsoft stores customer purchase histories and can support corresponding discounts, but staff must organize the distribution of physical stickers. An automatic «sixth purchase free» rule requires verification of the specific promotion settings; it does not happen by itself. Compare the number of participants who reach the reward threshold with actual repeat sales and the cost of gifts.

PROMOTION 38

Game-Based Challenge or Event Participation

A game-based event can give customers an opportunity to experience a product in its natural setting. A board game store might organize an open gaming evening, while a bookstore could host a meeting centered around a new publication. Such events primarily demonstrate the experience of using a product and do not necessarily have to include a substantial discount.

Les Binet and Peter Field distinguish long-term awareness building from short-term purchase stimulation. Therefore, an event can be valuable even if not every participant buys something on the same day. Provide simple participation rules, sufficient space, and a voluntary activity that does not pressure people to sing, perform, or publish personal photographs in exchange for a reward. The format should match visitors' interests.

Torgsoft can account for sales, gifts, or discounts issued during an event, but organizing the game or meeting remains the store's responsibility. Determine in advance which products need to be reserved, how consumables will be recorded, and who is responsible for checkout. After the event, review inquiries and repeat visits without attributing all sales solely to that one activity.

PROMOTION 39

Charity Promotion with Transparent Reporting

A charity promotion can combine ordinary sales with assistance to a specific beneficiary. For example, a store might allocate a fixed amount from every unit sold of a particular product to an agreed fundraising campaign for medical equipment. Customers should understand exactly how much will be transferred, to whom, over what period, and which documents can be used to verify it.

Trust in a store, as discussed by Fred Reichheld, is built through actions that can be verified. Therefore, do not rely solely on an emotional message such as «helping together». Explain the exact fundraising mechanism, publish the results, and do not mix customers' personal donations with sales revenue. If the initiative involves a charitable organization, agree on the use of its name and the reporting procedure.

In Torgsoft, you can determine the number of promotional products sold and the total sales amount used to calculate the promised contribution. The transfer of funds, supporting documents, and tax documentation must be handled separately. After the event, publish the final amount and supporting evidence, and reconcile it internally with actual sales and the conditions of the announced promotion.

PROMOTION 40

Trade-In: Exchange an Old Product for a New One with an Additional Payment

Exchanging an old product for a new one with an additional payment appeals to customers who want to upgrade electronics, tools, or other equipment. The customer hands over an old item, the store assesses its value, and that value is applied to the new purchase according to agreed rules. At first glance, this appears straightforward, but the offer involves condition assessment, accounting for accepted property, and tax documentation.

Mark Ritson recommends offering different customer groups solutions tailored to their specific needs. A trade-in is therefore most appropriate when a customer already owns an older model and plans to upgrade. Publish the valuation criteria, possible grounds for refusal, and the device handover procedure in advance. Display the price of the new product and the value of the old one separately so that customers understand the economics of the offer.

Torgsoft can record the sale of the new product and inventory transactions, but a fully automated trade-in system should not be claimed without additional verification. Accepting old property, assessing its value, and arranging its subsequent resale or disposal require a separate process. Account for the risk of faulty devices and calculate profit after diagnostic, repair, and storage expenses.

PROMOTION 41

Prize Draw Among Customers

A prize draw can attract attention to a store opening or another specific event. However, the opportunity to win does not make a product more useful, so the prize should reflect customers' interests and the rules should be as clear as possible. Participants must know what is required to enter, when the results will be announced, and how they can claim their prizes.

Robert Cialdini explains why transparency and trust influence how people perceive an offer. For a prize draw, this means publishing the winner selection procedure, dates, prize list, and restrictions before the promotion begins. It is better to exclude the organizer's employees from participation to avoid conflicts of interest. The legal structure, taxation of prizes, and risk of the event being classified as a lottery must be reviewed separately.

In Torgsoft, you can identify relevant sales, monitor products allocated as prizes, and maintain their inventory records. However, the software is not a specialized system for randomly selecting winners. Establish an independent, verifiable prize draw procedure and retain evidence of the results. Compare event costs with sales and the number of new customers attracted.

PROMOTION 42

Unconventional Themed Promotion

A themed promotion can be built around a season, hobby, or need that customers are familiar with. A fishing supplies store might prepare a selection before the start of the season, while a footwear store could organize a week dedicated to winter shoe care products. Such an offer can work without complicated games or unusual conditions if it appears exactly when people need the products.

Byron Sharp draws attention to the situations in which customers recall a brand. Therefore, a good theme should help customers find a solution rather than exist solely for the sake of an original name. Choose a specific product group, create a useful selection, and explain why it is relevant now. Do not link discounts to appearance, age, or other personal characteristics without a justified reason.

In Torgsoft, a themed promotion can use standard discount rules based on product groups, time, and retail locations. The creative concept itself does not require a separate software feature; it is implemented through assortment selection, product display, and communication. Check whether the products were available during the promotion, whether customers understood the offer, and whether profit from the selected category increased.

How to Evaluate Promotion Results

Compare the same days of the week before and during the promotion. Look beyond revenue to the number of receipts, average number of units per receipt, gross profit, total discounts, returns, and stock levels. If seasonality, shelling, air raid alerts, or changes in opening hours affect the results, record them separately: the comparison may not be equivalent.

Torgsoft includes «Discount Usage Analysis», «Customer Purchase Analysis», «Slow-Moving Inventory Analysis», «Bonus Movement Analysis», and other sales and profitability reports. The data shows what happened. Proving that the additional sales were caused specifically by the promotion is more difficult without a control comparison.

Profitability Check

Example: a product costs the customer UAH 1,000, while its cost of goods is UAH 700. A 20% discount reduces the difference between the selling price and the cost from UAH 300 to UAH 100, even before accounting for other expenses. To maintain the same total amount, three times as many units must be sold. This is an illustrative calculation, not a forecast of the promotion's results.

How to Set Up a Promotion in Torgsoft

  1. Open «Marketing → Promotions» and specify the promotion name and the discount as a percentage or fixed amount.
  2. Define the product group, customers, accounting centers, and type of trade.
  3. Set the dates, days of the week, hours, number of items, or transaction amount threshold.
  4. If necessary, configure a discount on one product, a triggering product group, and a control barcode.
  5. Check discount priorities, limits, and whether discounts can be combined.
  6. Create a test sale, and after making changes, open a new sales transaction or restart the software.

Instructions: promotion setup, complex promotions, discount limits and priorities.

Rules for Ukrainian Retail Stores

  • Specify the actual price before the discount, the new price, the offer period, the list of products, and any significant restrictions. Do not create an artificial «old» price.
  • For gifts, certificates, product exchanges, and charitable activities, establish the procedures for inventory, tax, and fiscal documentation in advance.
  • Before conducting a prize draw, check the contest rules, taxation of prizes, and the absence of characteristics associated with prohibited lottery or gambling activities.
  • For personalized offers, use contact information only when there is an appropriate legal basis, taking into account consent to marketing communications and the ability to opt out.
  • During electricity or communication outages, establish checkout procedures and how customers will be informed of changes to promotions. A configured discount does not, by itself, ensure uninterrupted fiscal receipt processing.

The current Law of Ukraine «On Consumer Rights Protection» No. 1023-XII defines the conditions for using the terms «discount» and «sale». As of October 2026, the new Law No. 3153-IX has not yet entered into force; its rules concerning the regular price over the preceding 30 days are not presented here as requirements currently in effect.
