Traffic arbitrage is a model in which a partner pays to attract visitors through paid advertising and receives compensation for an agreed customer action. For a store, this may mean paying a partner for a completed order. Profitability depends on acquisition costs, the share of accepted orders, the commission, and related expenses.
Before launch, the store owner and partner should agree in writing on permitted advertising sources, ad content, rules for crediting orders, returns, and payments. It is advisable to start with a limited test: compare advertising visits with actual sales, complete the agreed reconciliation period, and only then decide whether to increase the budget.

Who Participates in Affiliate Advertising and What They Pay For
- Advertiser — a store or other seller that sets the offer for customers and the terms of the partner’s commission.
- Partner — a contractor who attracts customers. If the partner buys advertising at their own expense and earns from the difference between the affiliate commission and costs, they operate under the traffic arbitrage model.
- Affiliate network — an intermediary between the advertiser and partners. Its participation, responsibilities for tracking results, fees, and settlement procedure should be defined in the cooperation terms. A store can work with a partner directly, without a network.
Paid traffic means website visits generated through paid ads. The partner spends money on advertising, but a customer’s visit alone does not entitle the partner to a commission. The payable action may be a lead, a paid purchase, or an order received by the customer, depending on the agreement.
For the first test, the store should choose a specific product category with known cost of goods and clear delivery terms. For example, the parties can agree on a commission for an order of home textiles that the customer has received and paid for. The owner can then compare partner payments with the actual revenue from the goods.
What to Agree in the Contract Before the First Ad Click
Prepare a short contract or addendum for the test campaign. The store owner is responsible for the product offer and order acceptance process; the partner is responsible for the agreed acquisition methods. If a network is involved, specify separately who makes decisions on disputed orders and who makes payments.
| Term | What to Specify |
|---|---|
| Products and advertising claims | Product list, prices, availability, promotion terms, delivery terms, and permitted claims. Who approves ads and changes to them. |
| Traffic sources | Permitted advertising platforms, websites, and formats. Whether mailings, advertising using the store’s name, and targeting existing customers are allowed. |
| Payable action | Conditions an order must meet: payment, receipt of the goods, and no return during the agreed period. Which products or customers are excluded. |
| Commission | Fixed amount or percentage; the percentage base, taking discounts, delivery, and partial returns into account; the network fee and the party that pays it. |
| Crediting an order to a partner | The period after a click during which a purchase may be credited to the partner, and the rule for choosing a partner if there were multiple clicks. |
| Repeat orders and returns | How duplicates are identified and cancellations, parcels not received by customers, and full or partial returns are handled. How already approved amounts are corrected. |
| Reconciliation and payment | Timeline for submitting statuses, reasons for rejection, the objection process, how long to wait for a final decision, and payment date. |
| Test limits | Budget, number of orders, timeline, procedure for stopping ads, and settlements for clicks that occurred before the stop. |
Attribution window means the agreed period between an advertising click and a purchase during which an order may be credited to a partner. Hold means the agreed waiting period while the advertiser determines whether the commission conditions have been met. These parameters do not have a single value for all affiliate programs; their duration and rules must be checked in the specific terms.
For example, for a test, the parties might agree that a purchase can be credited within seven days of the last permitted partner click. They should also decide separately what to do about a repeat purchase by the same customer or a click from another advertising channel. This agreement determines settlements with the partner and does not change the customer’s legal rights regarding the goods and returns.
How to Link Advertising to Actual Orders
Before launch, assign someone to reconcile the results. In a small store, this could be the owner or an order manager. They need a shared register in which each order has a unique number, date, partner identifier, post-discount product amount, payment and receipt status, return details, final decision on the commission, and reason for rejection.
- Set up click identifiers. The partner and technical specialist should agree on how the website will save the partner identifier and link it to the order number. If a promo code is used, specify whether it is sufficient for commission eligibility and what to do if it is shared outside the agreed advertising.
- Place test orders. Follow the path from the ad to purchase, reopen the confirmation page, cancel an order, and make a partial return. Make sure a repeated event does not create a second payment for one purchase.
- Compare website events with store operations. The manager needs to see whether the customer paid for and received the goods. A record showing that an order was placed does not confirm that these conditions were met.
- Send final statuses. On the agreed schedule, the responsible employee sends the partner or network order numbers, decisions, and commission amounts. Disputed records are reviewed before the payment is approved.
For website analytics, you can ask a developer to configure the purchase and refund events in Google Analytics 4. Google’s official documentation provides for the transaction_id identifier for purchases and refunds, and product and quantity data for detailed refunds. This setup requires access to the analytics account and website code. Partner payments should still be determined by the agreement and the results of order reconciliation.
Example Economics: 10,000 Clicks, 200 Orders, 150 Accepted
Hypothetical example. A partner advertises the store’s products and receives UAH 200 for each order that meets the agreed conditions. All figures below are for calculation purposes and are not a forecast of advertising performance.
| Metric | Calculation | Result |
|---|---|---|
| Paid clicks | 10,000 clicks × UAH 2 | UAH 20,000 in advertising costs |
| Orders placed | 200 ÷ 10,000 × 100% | 2% of clicks resulted in an order |
| Rejected orders | 20 duplicates + 15 cancellations + 15 returns | 50 orders |
| Accepted orders | 200 − 50 | 150 orders |
| Share accepted out of orders placed | 150 ÷ 200 × 100% | 75% |
| Partner revenue approved | 150 × UAH 200 | UAH 30,000 |
| Partner’s other costs | Ad preparation, services, and campaign work | UAH 4,000 |
| Partner’s total costs | 20,000 + 4,000 | UAH 24,000 |
| Campaign result | 30,000 − 24,000 | UAH 6,000 before taxes and general business expenses |
For this model, ROI (return on investment) for the campaign is: (30,000 − 24,000) ÷ 24,000 × 100% = 25%. This figure uses the specified set of costs. To calculate final profit, the entrepreneur must also account for taxes and business expenses not included in the UAH 24,000.
If the partner credited a commission immediately for all 200 orders placed, expected revenue would be UAH 40,000. After rejections, it is UAH 30,000. Therefore, until reconciliation is complete, show preliminary accruals, approved commissions, and payments actually received separately.
How Many Orders Are Needed to Break Even
With costs of UAH 24,000 and a partner commission of UAH 200, the partner needs 120 accepted orders: 24,000 ÷ 200 = 120. With the acceptance rate unchanged at 75%, this corresponds to 160 orders placed: 120 ÷ 0.75 = 160. For 10,000 clicks, the share of accepted orders must be at least 1.2%.
With 150 accepted orders and UAH 4,000 in other costs, the maximum advertising cost is UAH 26,000: 30,000 − 4,000. Therefore, the maximum average cost per click is UAH 2.60: 26,000 ÷ 10,000. This is the break-even limit if the example’s conditions remain unchanged. Profit requires a lower click cost, more accepted orders, or a different commission.
How the Store Evaluates the Same Campaign
The store should calculate its own economics separately. Continuation of the hypothetical example: each of the 150 accepted orders generates UAH 1,000 in revenue. The cost of goods is UAH 600, and the store’s costs for payment processing, packaging, and fulfillment are UAH 100 per order. After these costs, UAH 300 remains, of which the store pays UAH 200 to the partner.
The store’s remaining amount is 150 × (1,000 − 600 − 100 − 200) = UAH 15,000. Other test expenses still need to be covered, including costs for rejected orders, a network fee if applicable, taxes, and general expenses. Under these conditions, a UAH 300 payment per accepted order would already use the entire amount remaining before those expenses.
Why ROAS in the Advertising Account Does Not Show Profit
ROAS (return on advertising spend) is the ratio of attributed revenue to advertising costs. It helps evaluate advertising, but by itself does not account for product costs, all returns, partner payments, and other business expenses. Before using the metric, find out what amount the website sends to it and which purchases the advertising account attributes to the campaign.
Hypothetically, if the account showed 200 orders at UAH 1,000 each, its ROAS with advertising costs of UAH 20,000 would be 200,000 ÷ 20,000 = 10, or 1,000%. Even the ratio of revenue from only 150 accepted orders to the same advertising costs would be 7.5, or 750%. At the same time, the partner’s approved revenue in the example is UAH 30,000, and the partner’s result before taxes and general expenses is UAH 6,000.
The store owner and partner should keep separate calculations because they receive different income and bear different costs. Before increasing the budget, the owner should also find out whether the store is paying a commission for purchases by existing customers who planned to order even without this advertising. For a test, the parties can agree on separate terms for new and repeat customers.
How to Reconcile Customer Purchases and Returns in Torgsoft
If the store keeps records in Torgsoft, the responsible manager can use the customer history when reconciling affiliate orders. In the “Маркетинг → Клієнти” menu (“Marketing → Customers”), open the customer card and the “Придбання” tab (“Purchases”): it shows purchases and returns recorded during transactions associated with that customer. For reconciliation, it is important that the relevant transactions are linked to the correct customer card.
For each affiliate order, the manager keeps a link in a separate register to the store’s sales and return documents. During reconciliation, the manager finds the corresponding customer in Torgsoft and compares the goods and returns with the customer history and documents for that specific order. If a customer purchased the same goods several times, matching only the customer and goods is not enough to credit a commission. The manager enters the reconciliation result in the register, where the agreement determines the commission. Use purchase history to confirm the store’s transactions; track the advertising click, the rule for crediting the partner, and the partner’s payment amount separately.
How to Prepare Truthful and Transparent Affiliate Advertising
For advertising distributed in Ukraine, apply the requirements of the Law of Ukraine “On Advertising.” Articles 7–10 establish the principles of accuracy, requirements for identifying advertising, and prohibit unfair and covert advertising.
- Approve factual claims. The store owner should provide the partner with accurate prices, stock levels, product characteristics, and delivery terms. Before publication, the responsible employee compares the ad with the product page.
- Label paid content. If a partner publishes a review or other original content that draws attention to a product in exchange for compensation, the partner must identify it as advertising with the word “реклама” (“advertising”) in accordance with Article 9.
- Disclose discount terms. Under Article 8, Part 4, advertising a price reduction or sale must state the location, start and end dates, and the ratio of the new price to the previous price or the discount amount. For audio media, the source where the terms can be found must be stated.
- State prices in hryvnias. This is required by Article 8, Part 8, for advertising goods and services sold or provided in Ukraine.
- Obtain permission to use people’s names and images. Article 8, Part 1, Item 9 requires written consent, including electronic consent, or another form of consent provided by law. Exceptions include paid posing for advertising under the conditions established by law. Keep documents confirming the right to use an image for the campaign.
Also comply with the rules of the selected advertising platform. For example, Google Ads prohibits misrepresentation, including concealing material costs and advertising unavailable offers. A practical pre-launch check: the customer sees the same product, price, and material purchase terms in the ad and on the page.
What Data to Share with a Partner and How to Organize Mailings
For reconciliation, start with the minimum set: order number, partner identifier, date, amount, status, and commission. Do not give the partner the entire customer database to confirm a few sales. Provide access to data that can identify a customer only for a specific lawful purpose and with an appropriate legal basis.
Articles 6 and 11 of the Law of Ukraine “On Personal Data Protection” require that data correspond to the processing purpose and define the legal bases for processing. Consent is one such basis; the law also provides, among others, for performance of a transaction and protection of legitimate interests, taking human rights into account. A basis for processing a purchase does not automatically authorize any subsequent advertising use of the data. A new purpose incompatible with the original one requires consent unless otherwise provided by law.
If the partner plans to send electronic advertising messages, agree on this before launch. Article 10 of the Law of Ukraine “On Electronic Commerce” provides for distributing such messages on the basis of consent, while Part 3 allows sending them without consent only if recipients can opt out of further messages. This provision does not replace the legal basis for processing personal data.
For a test campaign, it is advisable to use mailings based on prior consent, keep evidence of consent, and provide a simple opt-out. A message must be clearly identifiable as commercial, provide easy access to information about the sender, state incentive terms unambiguously, and explain whether taxes are included in the price and what delivery costs.
How to Finish the Test and Decide Whether to Increase the Budget
- Stop new spending at the agreed limit. The partner stops advertising when the budget is used up or another test completion condition is met.
- Wait for the agreed periods to end. The manager accounts for orders that may still be credited for previous clicks and closes their statuses.
- Explain every rejection. The register should show separate reasons for duplicates, cancellations, returns, or failure to meet campaign terms.
- Calculate the result for both parties. The partner calculates revenue after acquisition costs; the store calculates what remains after product costs, order fulfillment, returns, and partner payments.
- Update the terms for the next test. Increase the budget only within the limits allowed by stock availability, manager capacity, and funds for payments. The next campaign may have a different click cost and return rate.
