Metered goods calculator

Metric Goods Calculator — is a Torgsoft option for stores where goods are calculated in square or linear meters, but sold in packages, rolls, or sheets.

The seller enters the required area — the program calculates the number of packages, the material remainder, and the final cost, taking the trimming percentage into account. This calculation works for tiles, laminate, linoleum, wallpaper, parquet, and carpet. Goods are accounted for simultaneously in two units: packages and square meters.

The option is suitable for construction stores, finishing material stores, and flooring stores. It works with all Torgsoft licenses.

Sell tiles, laminate, and linoleum without manual calculations

The buyer names the required area — the program calculates the number of packages, pieces, and the final amount itself.

Metric Goods Calculator in Torgsoft: calculating tiles by area

What metric goods are and why they need to be calculated

Metric goods are goods purchased by area or length, but stored and shipped in whole packages, rolls, or sheets. For example, a buyer needs 14.5 square meters of tiles, while one package contains 1.44. Without calculation, the seller takes a calculator, divides the area by the package area, rounds it, recalculates the actual meters and the amount. This takes time and is easy to get wrong. Metric Goods Calculator performs this calculation for the seller directly in the sales window.

Basic concepts

MG

Metric goods

Goods calculated in meters (square or linear), but shipped in packages, rolls, or sheets.

UOM

Unit of measurement

Set in the product type, for example «sq.m». This is the unit in which the goods are sold and moved between outlets.

DIM

Dimensionality

One-dimensional, two-dimensional, or three-dimensional — depending on how many dimensions need to be considered.

QPK

Quantity per package

How many pieces (tiles, sheets) are contained in one package. Needed for accurate recalculation.

CAL

Dimensional goods calculator

A window in sales where you enter the area or number of pieces, and the program calculates the rest.

2UN

Accounting in two units

The goods balance is visible simultaneously in both packages and square meters.

Who this option is for

Construction stores

Tiles, parquet, lining boards, foam plastic, wall and roof insulation — goods with two or three dimensions.

Flooring

Laminate, linoleum, carpet, parquet board — sales by area with rounding to a package or roll.

Finishing materials

Wallpaper, skirting board, timber, window sills — linear meters and rolls recalculated into pieces.

Wholesale and warehouse

Where goods arrive in packages and are distributed to outlets — with control of package multiples.

Who does not need it. If you sell piece goods that are not recalculated into meters (clothing, footwear, electronics, accessories), the option is not needed. For weighed goods sold on scales, a separate packing and labeling option is suitable.

When to activate it immediately

  • Goods arrive in packages, while the buyer asks for «so many squares».
  • Sellers calculate the number of tiles manually and make mistakes in the final amount.
  • Shortages or mismatches occur at outlets due to non-multiple package movements.
  • You need to see the balance simultaneously in packages and square meters.

What it looks like before and after

Before

The seller takes a calculator, divides the required area by the package area, rounds up, calculates the pieces and amount, and rewrites the balance. Each customer takes several minutes, and errors in the amount occur regularly.

After

The seller enters the required area into the calculator — the program immediately shows the number of tiles, packages, actual area, and amount. The balance is updated both in packages and in meters.

How it works: 5 steps

Activate the function. Enable the additional function «Metric characteristics of goods» in the list of options.

Create a product type. In the Document — Goods Receipt menu, create a product type, for example «Tile», specify «sq.m» in the Unit field, and select «Metric» in the Dimensionality item.

Set dimensionality. On the metrics tab, select one-dimensional (skirting board, timber, linoleum, carpets), two-dimensional (tiles, parquet, lining boards), or three-dimensional. For tiles, this is two-dimensional — specify length and width and, if needed, the number of tiles per package. Click Save.

Enable the calculator in sales. In Settings — Parameters — Document, tick «Show metric goods calculator in sales».

Sell by area. During sales, the Dimensional Goods Calculator opens: specify the required area or number of pieces — the program will calculate the rest, round to whole pieces, and recalculate the actual area and amount.

Important. Metric goods are sold and moved between outlets in exactly the units you specified in the product type. If the unit of measurement is «sq.m», then tile dimensions are also specified in meters.

Scenarios by niche

Tile store

The customer names the bathroom area. The seller enters square meters, the program calculates the number of tiles and packages, rounds to whole pieces, and shows the actual area and amount.

Flooring

Laminate and linoleum arrive in packages and rolls. The calculator converts the required area into the number of packages, and the balance is visible both in meters and in packages.

Chain with several outlets

Goods are distributed to stores in packages. The program shows the quantity per package and warns if the distributed quantity is not a multiple of the package.

Example

The example is illustrative. A finishing materials store sells tiles, laminate, and wallpaper. Before activating the option, sellers calculated the number of tiles on a calculator, made occasional mistakes in the amount, and the warehouse balance between packages and meters did not match.

After activation, the seller enters the required area into the calculator, and the program immediately shows the number of pieces, packages, and the actual amount. The balance is updated in two units, and the exact number of pieces for shipment can be printed for the warehouse worker.

Which options and equipment it works with

Comprehensive automation. The Metric Goods Calculator works in one program with warehouse accounting, sales, and distribution to outlets, so area calculation becomes part of the regular workflow, not a separate action.
