Registering a serial number
Serial number tracking is needed when it is important to know the movement of each individual item, not just the total quantity of goods. When receiving goods, register the number shown on the item and check it against the supplier’s document. For sales, internal transfers and stocktaking, select the actual item with the matching number. This lets you trace where the item was and to whom it was transferred.
Warranty and returns
Use the number to find the sale, date and warranty period; check the related supplier before processing a return. After handing the item over to the supplier, track the document and the subsequent receipt of the replacement item. The report on goods under warranty helps you check their status.
