The barcode scanner "bleeps", but the product is not added to Torgsoft
A situation where the barcode scanner gives a sound signal, but the product does not appear in the sales form, goods receipt invoice, or stocktaking in Torgsoft. In most cases, the reason is related to the scanner settings, its operating mode, or input logic, not to a program error.
When the scanner stops adding a product correctly
-
after connecting a new scanner,
-
after resetting or changing the equipment settings,
-
after updating Windows or reinstalling Torgsoft,
-
when using a wireless scanner that has not been used for a long time,
-
after replacing the USB port or USB receiver.
How to understand what exactly the problem is
-
the scanner beeps, but the product is not added to the receipt or document,
-
the barcode appears in the input field, but the product is not pulled up,
-
the digits are entered, but not confirmed,
-
unrelated windows open during scanning (Help, Journal, etc.),
-
after the sound signal, nothing happens in the program at all.
How to quickly check the scanner in Windows
The fastest way to understand where the problem is — a check in Windows.
-
Open Notepad.
-
Place the cursor in an empty text field.
-
Scan any barcode.
Result:
-
the code appeared and the cursor moved to a new line → the scanner is working, the problem is in the Torgsoft settings,
-
the code appeared, but the cursor stayed on the same line → the Enter terminator is missing,
-
nothing appeared → the problem is with the scanner operating mode or connection.
Are prefixes and suffixes visible in Notepad
In Notepad, all printable characters that the scanner sends together with the barcode are visible (for example, ;, ^, extra digits).
The terminator («terminator» is the final character or service command that the scanner automatically sends to the computer immediately after reading the barcode digits) Enter is not displayed as a symbol, but is determined by the cursor moving to a new line.
Some control characters (Tab, Esc, service codes) may be invisible in Notepad, but still affect Torgsoft operation — open windows or change focus.
Note: if there is suspicion of extra commands, Factory Default alone may not be enough. In that case, you need to clear prefixes and suffixes separately and set only the Enter terminator again.
How to restore correct scanning in Torgsoft
1. No Enter terminator (most common reason)
Torgsoft receives the barcode digits, but does not start the product search without confirmation with the Enter key.
How to identify this:
-
after scanning, the barcode remains in the input field,
-
the code is visible in the field, but the search does not start without Enter,
-
the product is added only after manually pressing Enter on the keyboard.

What to do:
-
open the manual for the scanner model,
-
find the service barcode «Enter Terminator»
(in some manuals it may be called Add Enter Suffix / Suffix Enter / CR+LF), -
scan this barcode,
-
repeat the test in Notepad and in Torgsoft.
2. Correction of barcodes starting with zero
The scanner works correctly in Notepad, but Torgsoft does not find products whose barcodes start with 0 (the code in the database and the code from the scanner differ because of the leading zero).
Solution:
-
go to Settings → Parameters → Barcode,
-
disable the parameter «Correct barcodes starting with zero».
Note: this parameter is checked when the barcode in the database, the barcode sent by the scanner, and the barcode in the import file differ from each other because of the leading zero.
3. The scanner opens unrelated windows
The scanner sends extra prefixes or service commands before the barcode digits: Tab, Alt, an F-key, or others.
Solution:
-
find the Restore Factory Default barcode in the scanner manual,
-
perform a reset to factory settings,
-
if the problem remains, perform Clear Prefix / Clear Suffix separately,
-
after that, set only the Enter terminator again.
4. The scanner beeps, but data is not transmitted (storage mode or COM)
Symptom: there is a sound signal, but no text appears either in Torgsoft or in Notepad.
Possible causes and solutions:
-
the wireless scanner switched to storage mode → scan the Normal Mode / Instant Upload code,
-
the wired scanner operates in Virtual COM mode → switch it to USB HID (Keyboard) mode using the manual.
5. 12 digits are transmitted instead of 13
The scanner does not transmit the EAN-13 check digit.
Solution:
-
find the Transmit Check Digit parameter in the scanner settings,
-
enable it.
If the scanner does not transmit the check digit, Torgsoft may not find the product
6. Cursor focus and «Request quantity»
Check:
-
the cursor must be in the «Barcode / Article» field,
-
the «Request quantity» button must not block input, otherwise the program waits for confirmation in an additional window.
What to do if the wireless scanner is discharged
Relevant for wireless models.
Explanation: the «successful scan» sound and the «low battery» sound are often very similar. The user hears a beep and assumes the scan took place, but the data is not transmitted.
What to check:
-
put the scanner on charge,
-
wait for the charging indicator,
-
repeat the test in Notepad,
-
if necessary, check the model manual.
How to check that scanning works again
-
the cursor is in the barcode field,
-
one scanner beep,
-
the product immediately appears in the table,
-
the input field is cleared automatically.
How to avoid repeated scanner problems
-
after connecting a new scanner, always do a test in Notepad,
-
do not use passive USB hubs,
-
charge wireless scanners regularly,
-
keep the service codes «Enter Terminator», Clear Prefix / Clear Suffix and Factory Reset for your model.
What to prepare for technical support
-
a photo or screenshot of the scanning result in Notepad,
-
a photo of the product label with the barcode,
-
the scanner model (sticker on the body),
-
a screenshot of Settings → Parameters → Barcode.
What is important to remember
If the scanner beeps, but the product is not added:
- check the Enter terminator →
- check the test in Notepad →
- check prefixes and suffixes →
- check the scanner operating mode →
and only after that check the power supply and hardware.
